A ceiling that has gone soft and started to sag with a visible, heavy bulge is one of the more alarming things a homeowner walks into, and the instinct is usually to either poke it right away or stand frozen underneath it. Both instincts can be wrong. A small, contained bulge is usually safer to drain in a controlled way than to leave hanging, because a drained bulge cannot fall on you and a full one eventually will. 02 / THE MECHANICSWhy a ceiling fills like a balloon
Water almost never drips straight down from the hole it came through. It enters at the roof, runs along the underside of the decking and down a rafter, tracks across the top of the ceiling, and finally pools at a low spot or where the drywall is fastened. Paint is surprisingly good at holding water for a while. A latex paint film over drywall can stretch and balloon, trapping a pocket of water behind it like a water balloon pinned to your ceiling, which is why a bulge can appear far from where the leak actually started. That traveling is also why the size of the bulge is not a reliable read on the size of the leak. A pinhole failure in a pipe boot on the roof can send enough water into one low spot to fill a bulge overnight, while a larger roof problem might spread thin and never balloon at all. What the bulge does tell you reliably is that the drywall or plaster at that spot has given up, the fasteners are letting go, and gravity is now the only thing holding the water up there. Left alone, the material saturates further, gets heavier, and eventually tears loose. Draining it on purpose is how you take gravity out of the fight.
The clock matters here too. 03 / THE PROCEDUREHow to drain a bulge safely
This is for the small, contained, sound-ceiling case only. Reread the warning box above before you start. If any part of you is unsure whether the ceiling qualifies, treat it as one that does not.
- Clear the zone first. Move furniture, electronics, and rugs out from under the bulge and a few feet around it. Assume the whole soft area could come down, not just the blister.
- Kill the power to that room. If there is any chance water is near a light box, switch, or outlet, turn off the breaker for that circuit before you go near the ceiling. Do not flip a wet switch to test it. If a fixture is involved at all, stop and call.
- Put down protection and a catch. Lay a tarp or plastic sheeting, set a bucket directly under the lowest point of the bulge, and have towels ready. A five-gallon bucket holds more than most bulges carry, but keep a second one within reach.
- Make one small hole at the lowest point. Standing to the side rather than directly beneath it, use the tip of a screwdriver or an awl on the end of a broom handle to pierce a single small hole at the very bottom of the bulge. Water follows the low point, so that is where it will drain fastest and most predictably.
- Let it run, do not widen it. Resist the urge to open the hole up. One controlled stream into a bucket is the goal. A big gash releases the water all at once and can bring wet drywall with it.
- Empty and repeat as needed. Larger pockets may need the bucket emptied once or twice. When the flow stops, leave the hole open so any remaining water keeps weeping out rather than repooling behind the paint.
Once it is drained, the ceiling is stable enough to stop being an immediate hazard, but it is not fixed and it is not dry. Leave the hole open, keep the room ventilated, and move on to drying the space out. A drained bulge is a bulge that can no longer fall on someone. That is the entire reason to relieve it, and it is also the reason to stop the moment a ceiling looks too big or too old to trust.
04 / THE RED LINESWhen to leave the room instead
Some ceilings should never be poked. Draining is a fix for a small blister, not for a failing ceiling, and the difference is about weight and structure, not bravery. Back out and call a professional if you see any of the following.
- A wide sag. If the drooping area is larger than a couple of feet across, there may be far more water up there than a bucket can catch, and a single hole can trigger a broad collapse. This is a takedown for someone with the right protection and cleanup, not a screwdriver job.
- Cracking plaster. Plaster does not balloon gracefully the way painted drywall does. When it fails it tends to crack, spall, and drop in heavy chunks with little warning. Fresh cracks radiating from a wet spot are a signal to clear the room.
- A light fixture or fan in the bulge. Water pooling around a ceiling light box or a fan mount is an electrical hazard first and a water problem second. Kill the breaker, do not touch the fixture, do not drain around it, and get both a roofer and, if needed, an electrician involved.
- Any sound. Creaking, cracking, or popping from the ceiling means the structure is moving. Leave the room, close the door to contain the mess, and keep people and pets out until help arrives.
- A ceiling you cannot reach safely. If relieving the bulge would mean overreaching from a wobbly stool or standing directly under a heavy sag, the safe version of this job does not exist for you. Call it in.
None of these mean you did something wrong. They mean the situation is past the point where a homeowner should be the one under the ceiling.
