A homeowner staring at a new brown ring on the ceiling almost always makes the same assumption: whatever let the water in must be directly above the stain. It is a reasonable guess, and it is wrong more often than it is right. Water on a roof deck does not fall straight through drywall the moment it finds an opening. It runs downhill along the underside of the sheathing, follows a rafter or a truss chord, sometimes rides the top of a vapor barrier or old insulation for several feet, and only drops through the ceiling at whatever low point or seam lets it. The stain marks where the water gave up, not where it got in. That distinction is the whole reason a stain has to be traced rather than simply patched over, and it is why we always want a look at the attic before we ever touch a shingle.

Here is the short version. Treat a ceiling stain after a storm as evidence, not as an address. Do not assume the roof problem sits directly overhead, do not paint over it before it is photographed and dated, and do not assume a single stain means a single leak. The real work of tracing a leak happens from the attic side, following the path water actually travels along the decking and framing back to the point where it entered the roof system. A fresh, damp, actively spreading stain after a storm is worth a prompt look. 02 / THE PHYSICSWhy the stain is almost never under the hole
Roof decking is built from sheets of plywood or OSB laid over rafters or trusses, usually sloped enough that any water sitting on top of it wants to move downhill. When wind-driven rain gets past a lifted shingle, a cracked seal strip, or a failed flashing detail, it lands on the top face of that decking, not inside the room below. From there gravity and the slope of the roof decide where it goes next, and that is rarely straight down through the exact spot it entered.
Water that finds a gap in the decking, a nail hole, or a seam between sheets will run along the underside of the wood until it meets a rafter, then track along that rafter like a gutter. If there is old insulation or a vapor barrier in its path, it can travel sideways across the top of that material for several feet before finding a low point, a wiring penetration, or a seam in the ceiling drywall to drip through. A leak entering near a ridge can show up as a stain a full room away, on a slope the water never physically touched from outside. This is the single most common reason a homeowner points at a stain and a roofer's flashlight ends up several feet upslope of it.
It is also why patching the shingles directly above a stain sometimes does nothing. If the true entry point is a foot or two off in any direction, from the true source of hail damage on a ridge cap to a wind-lifted seal strip near a valley, the next hard rain finds the same path down to the same stain, and the homeowner reasonably assumes the repair failed. The slope and framing of the roof itself shape how far the water can travel before it shows up. A steep pitch moves water downhill quickly along the decking, so the drop point can end up a full room away from the entry, while a shallower slope can let water pool briefly against a seam or a low spot and drip through closer to where it came in. Roofs with a ridge vent, a chimney, or a valley nearby give water more places to be redirected sideways before it ever reaches a rafter it can follow down. Color and edge
A fresh water stain usually shows a yellow-brown center with a darker, still-damp ring at its outer edge, because the water is actively wicking outward through the drywall or plaster as it spreads. An old stain has typically dried into a flatter, more uniform tan or brown color with a hard, defined edge and no darker halo, because the migration stopped long ago and the color simply set in place.
Touch and give
Pressing gently on the center of a stain (careful, and never hard enough to break through) tells you a lot. Soft, spongy, or slightly bowed drywall usually means moisture is still present or was present recently enough that the material has not fully dried and rehardened. A stain that feels as firm and flat as the surrounding ceiling has likely been dry for a long time.
Ring pattern and growth
A single clean ring that has not changed shape in the time you have owned the house is a strong sign of an old, resolved event. Concentric rings, like the growth lines on a tree stump, usually mean the same spot has taken on water more than once, at different times, which points to a recurring source rather than a one-time event. Any stain that visibly grows in diameter over hours or days during or after a storm is active and current, full stop.
Smell and surrounding growth
A musty or mildew smell, or any dark speckling around the stain's edge, suggests moisture has been sitting in that cavity for a while, not just during the storm itself. That combination is worth having looked at even if the stain itself looks visually calm, because it can mean slow, ongoing moisture rather than a single storm event.
