Stand under a leaking gutter in a hard rain and watch where the water actually escapes. It will not be pouring through the flat, uninterrupted middle of a run. It will be dripping from a corner, weeping out of an end cap, or running down the back of a joint where two lengths of gutter were fastened together. Seams are the weak point of any gutter system, and after enough Macomb County freeze and thaw cycles, they are the first thing to give. A seamless system is roll-formed on site into one continuous piece for the length of each straight run, which removes the mid-run slip joints that older sectional gutters rely on. It does not remove every seam, because corners, outlets, and end caps still have to be joined, but it removes the ones most likely to fail. Almost every seam leak we are called out to trace back to one of three connections. Knowing which one you have tells you how involved the fix is and whether a reseal will hold or the section is simply past saving.

Mitered corners

A miter is where two runs of gutter meet at a corner, most often at ninety degrees around the eave of the house. It is the single most common place for a gutter to leak, because a corner is where two cut edges of metal are married together and sealed, and it is also a low point that water is constantly funneled toward. Inside corners are worse than outside corners: they collect the flow from two directions and concentrate it right on the seam. When you see a stain streaking down the fascia or siding at a corner, the miter sealant has almost always let go.

End caps

An end cap is the small piece that closes off the end of a gutter run. It is a short seam, but it sits at the very end where debris tends to pile up and water can stand, and the cap is often just crimped and sealed onto the trough. When that seam opens, you get a steady drip at the end of the run, frequently right next to the house corner, which over time rots the fascia board and the trim behind it. End-cap leaks are cheap and quick to reseal correctly, and expensive to ignore.

Slip joints and outlets

Older sectional gutters are built from ten-foot lengths joined by overlapping slip joints, each one sealed and riveted or screwed. Every joint is a potential leak, and a long sectional run can have several. Downspout outlets, where a hole is cut in the bottom of the trough and a drop tube is fitted, are the other cut-in seam that commonly weeps. If water is dripping straight down the middle of a run rather than a corner, a slip joint or an outlet is the likely source. 03 / THE MECHANISMWhat actually breaks the seal

A seam does not fail because the sealant was bad on day one. It fails because of what happens to that seam every single day for years, and Michigan is about as hard on a gutter joint as any climate in the country.

The first force is thermal movement. Aluminum, the metal most Macomb County gutters are made from, expands and contracts noticeably as it heats in the sun and cools at night. A long run grows and shrinks measurably across a hot summer day, and that motion works constantly against the sealant at every fixed joint. Over enough cycles, an inflexible sealant or a rigid patch simply fatigues and separates from the metal. This is why the industry uses flexible, gutter-rated sealants that can stretch with the joint rather than crack. The second force, and the one that finishes the job here, is freeze and thaw. When a joint holds even a little standing water because of debris or slightly flat slope, that water gets into the hairline gap at the seam, freezes, and expands. Ice is a wedge. Every freeze pries the seam open a fraction more, and every thaw lets more water in to do it again. A joint that might last for years in a mild climate can be leaking within a few Michigan winters. Add the weight of ice loading that flexes and bends the whole trough, and the seams take punishment from several directions at once. A seam leak is rarely a mystery. Something moved the joint, water sat in it, and winter did the rest. Fix only the sealant and you have treated the symptom, not the cause.

04 / THE REPAIRA reseal that lasts versus a smear of tar

Here is the part that decides whether your gutter leaks again next year. The difference between a seam repair that holds and one that fails is almost entirely about preparation and the right material, not about how much sealant you pile on. The wrong way is the common way: someone climbs a ladder, smears a glob of roofing tar or whatever caulk is in the garage over the wet, dirty seam, and calls it done. That patch will look fine for a season and then peel away, because sealant cannot bond to grime, corrosion, or a wet surface, and roofing tar in particular stays brittle and cracks under the joint's movement.

THE SMEAR-AND-HOPE TRAP

Black roofing tar or asphalt cement over a gutter seam is the single most common failed repair we find. It looks like a fix, it seals nothing for long, and it makes the eventual proper repair harder because the old tar has to be scraped off first. If a seam has been tarred before, it will usually need to go seamless or be rebuilt to hold.

A reseal that actually lasts follows the same short discipline every time. Clean the seam back to bare, sound metal, removing all old sealant, debris, and any oxidation, because bond strength is entirely a function of a clean surface. Let it get fully dry, since almost no sealant cures properly against moisture. Then apply a flexible, gutter-grade sealant rated for metal and for movement, worked into the joint from the inside of the trough so the water flows over it rather than against an exposed edge. Where the seam also depends on rivets or screws that have loosened, those get renewed too, because sealant is meant to waterproof a sound mechanical joint, not to hold two loose pieces of metal together.

Done that way, an end cap or a single miter can be brought back to watertight and stay that way for years. Done the smear-and-hope way, you will be back on the ladder every spring. The honest question is whether the run is worth the disciplined repair, and that depends on how many seams are failing and how old the system is. 05 / THE TIPPING POINTWhen resealing stops making sense and seamless wins

Resealing one corner or one end cap on an otherwise healthy gutter is good money spent. The math changes when the seams keep coming. If you have resealed a joint twice and it keeps reopening, the run is telling you something: either the slope is wrong and water keeps standing on that seam, the metal has fatigued around the joint, or the whole system is old enough that fixing one seam just moves the leak to the next one down the line.

There are a few clear signals that it is time to stop patching. A sectional run with several failing slip joints is rarely worth chasing one leak at a time, because the next joint is already on its way out. Metal that is pitted, oxidized, or has been tarred over is a poor bonding surface for any new sealant. And a gutter that is also sagging, pulling away from the fascia, or overflowing at the corners has problems the sealant cannot solve. In all of those cases, replacing the run with seamless gutters usually costs less over the next several years than repeated repairs, and it removes the mid-run joints that caused most of the trouble in the first place.
