Icicle Watch: What Big Icicles Say About a Roof and Attic
A short row of icicles along the gutter is normal winter scenery. A curtain of them, thick as a wrist and reaching for the ground, is a roof and attic talking to you in the only language ice knows. Here is how to read it.
Every winter, Macomb County houses grow icicles, and most of them mean nothing. Snow melts a little at midday, drips to the gutter edge, and refreezes overnight into a small, clear, fairly uniform fringe. What we watch for on inspections is the other kind: icicles that are thick, opaque, uneven across a single eave, or growing fast even when the air never gets near thawing. Those are not decoration. They are the visible tip of water moving somewhere it should not be.
01 /Where the water actually comes from
An icicle needs a steady drip, and in the middle of a Michigan cold snap there are only two sources for one. Either the sun warmed the snow enough to melt it, producing the short, clear, uniform icicles that show up on a sunny afternoon and mostly stop growing once the sun goes down. Or heat is escaping from inside the house, through the attic floor and into the roof deck, melting the underside of the snowpack regardless of what the sun is doing. That second kind keeps dripping through the night and through cloud cover. If icicles on your house are getting longer on a gray, cold week with no direct sun on that side of the roof, the heat driving them is coming from inside, not above.
02 /Reading size and location
Location tells you almost as much as size. A uniform fringe running the entire gutter, roughly the same thickness end to end, usually points to an even, ordinary melt across the whole roof. What changes the read is unevenness: a section of noticeably longer, thicker icicles over one bedroom or bathroom, while the rest of the eave stays short, is a strong sign of a local heat leak, often a bath fan vent, a can light, or thin insulation above that spot. Icicles clustered near a chimney or vent stack often mean the same thing at a smaller scale.
- Short, thin, uniform, only on sunny afternoons. Ordinary solar melt and refreeze. Cosmetic, and not something we would flag on an inspection by itself.
- Long, thick, growing overnight or on overcast days. Attic heat is escaping onto the roof deck. Worth an inspection even if nothing is leaking yet.
- Uneven length across one eave, concentrated over one room or vent. A localized insulation or air-sealing gap under that section of roof.
- Icicles feeding a visible ridge of ice at the gutter or eave. An ice dam is likely already forming behind what you can see from the ground.
03 /Why knocking them down solves nothing
Knocking icicles off a gutter is a common instinct, since a heavy icicle can be dangerous if it lets go on its own. But removing the icicle does not touch the cause. The heat leak keeps leaking, the melt keeps running down to the cold eave, and by the next cold night the icicles are back in the same uneven pattern, because the gap in insulation or ventilation has not moved. If the icicles are already being fed by an ice dam, breaking them off the front does nothing to the ridge of ice and the pooled meltwater sitting behind it under the shingles, which is the part actually capable of finding its way into a ceiling.
An ice dam can be actively backing water under your shingles for weeks before a stain ever shows up on a ceiling below. If you have watched one section of your eave grow noticeably heavier icicles than the rest of the house for more than a season, that is the roof and attic flagging themselves for a look. 04 /What we recommend watching for
Keep it simple. Walk the house once or twice a winter and compare the icicles eave to eave. A pattern that repeats every cold week, especially one concentrated over a single room, is worth a phone photo. It is also worth pairing with what your gutters were doing before the freeze; a gutter left clogged into the freeze compounds an ice dam that a clean gutter would have drained more of.
