Late-Summer Severe Season: The Second Peak

Ask anyone in southeast Michigan when storm season is and you will hear spring. That is half an answer. There is a second peak that runs through the back half of summer, and the single most consequential wind event in recent Macomb County history landed inside it.

Spring severe weather has a reputation here because it is dramatic and because it arrives after a winter of nothing. Late summer severe weather has no reputation at all, which is exactly why it catches roofs unprepared. The atmosphere in late August still has plenty of heat and moisture to work with, and the storms it produces are frequently wind events rather than the tornado-watch spectacle people brace for in April.

01 /The local file on this is not hypothetical

On August 24 to 26, 2023, severe storms, tornadoes, and flooding crossed southeast Michigan. The National Weather Service Detroit summary of the August 24 event documents gusts in the 60 to 80 mph range across parts of the region, with locally stronger embedded bursts. It ended in a federal major disaster declaration, DR-4757-MI, declared February 8, 2024, with Macomb County among the nine designated Michigan counties.

That is the benchmark we point people to, not because every late August is like it, but because it establishes that the back half of summer here is capable of a federally declared wind event. Any roof planning that treats June as the end of storm season is planning around half the year.

02 /Why the second peak damages roofs differently

Spring storms tend to arrive on organized frontal systems that the forecast sees coming for days. Late summer storms are more often driven by heat and instability, which means pulse thunderstorms, wet microbursts, and downburst winds that hit a narrow footprint hard and are gone in fifteen minutes. Those events do not always earn a warning that reaches you in time, and they do not always make the regional news.

For a roof, a fifteen minute downburst is functionally the same as an hour of gradient wind. It concentrates pressure at the edges, rakes, and corners, which is where uplift is highest and where a shingle that never fully sealed is most likely to let go. The damage that follows is often invisible from the street: a course of shingles lifted and dropped back down, seals broken, no missing tabs to point at.

THE THRESHOLD THAT MATTERS

The National Weather Service severe threshold is a 58 mph gust. Shingles begin lifting and creasing below that number, especially at edges and on roofs where the sealant strip never fully bonded. A storm does not need to qualify as severe to take the seal off your windward slope.

03 /The check worth running after a late-summer storm

The morning after a hard late summer storm, do a lap of the house from the ground with the sun behind you. You are not looking for a hole. You are looking for disorder: a course sitting at a different angle than its neighbors, a lifted corner, granule piles at the splash blocks, shingle fragments in the yard, or fresh dents in soft metal like gutters, downspouts, and the top of the AC condenser.

Then go up into the attic with a flashlight in daylight and look for light where it should not be and for fresh staining on the sheathing. Both of those checks are free, neither needs a ladder, and together they catch most of what a wind event leaves behind. We wrote the fuller version into the August roof calendar.

04 /Why the timing of documentation matters

Wind and hail damage does not improve while it waits, and the longer the gap between the storm and the inspection, the harder it becomes for anyone to tell storm damage from ordinary aging. That is not a scare tactic, it is just how the evidence works: a creased shingle photographed a week after a documented regional wind event tells a cleaner story than the same shingle photographed the following spring.

What we can do is document what is actually on your roof with photographs and meet your adjuster on site. What no roofer can honestly do is promise you a claim outcome. Anyone who does is telling you something they are not in a position to know, and that promise is one of the more reliable warning signs in this trade. Repairs run $350 to $3,200, and larger or complex repairs can run higher. Full asphalt replacement runs $9,000 to $18,000, with most homes between $12,000 and $16,000. The inspection that tells you which conversation you are in costs nothing.
