The August 2023 Tornadoes in SE Michigan: A Field Record
The storms that put Macomb County into the FEMA DR-4757 file did more than push straight-line wind. In the last week of August 2023, National Weather Service crews surveyed tornado damage across southeast Michigan. This is the companion note: what the surveys recorded, and why rotating wind breaks roofs differently.
The last week of August 2023 put southeast Michigan into the National Weather Service's survey logs twice over. The same storm sequence that later produced the federal disaster declaration covering Macomb County, FEMA DR-4757, also spun up tornadoes that NWS Detroit crews walked, photographed, and rated in the days that followed. This note is the companion file: what the tornado surveys put on paper, and what a rotating wind does to a roof system that a straight-line gust does not.
01 /What the surveys put on the record
When a tornado is suspected, the National Weather Service does not guess from radar alone. Survey teams drive the damage path on the ground, photograph what broke, and work backward from the wreckage to an estimated wind speed, which becomes a rating on the Enhanced Fujita scale. For the late August 2023 outbreak, NWS Detroit issued public information statements documenting each confirmed track. For a homeowner, the value of these documents is practical, not academic. A confirmed track fixes a date and a place at the federal and state level. 02 /Rotating wind loads a roof differently
A straight-line gust, even a violent one, loads a roof from one direction. The windward slope takes pressure, the leeward slope takes suction, and the shingle courses are at least being pushed the way they were designed to shed. A tornado does not offer that courtesy. Rotation means the wind direction at your roof can swing through most of the compass in seconds, so every slope takes both pushing and pulling loads in a single pass, including directions the exposed edges of the shingles were never meant to face.
The second difference is uplift. Fast air moving across a roof plane drops in pressure, the same effect that lifts an airplane wing, and the suction is strongest where the airflow separates: at the eaves, the rakes, the ridge, and above all the corners. Engineers who model wind loads treat roof corners and edges as their own high-suction zones for exactly this reason. Rotating wind sweeps those separation zones around the house, so the corner that was sheltered one moment is the peak-suction point the next.
03 /The failure order, edge to ridge
Wind damage to an asphalt roof is not random. It follows a sequence, and knowing the sequence is how an inspector separates storm damage from ordinary wear:
- The sealant bond breaks first. Each shingle course is glued to the one below by a factory adhesive strip. Uplift peels at that bond, and once it lets go the tab is loose even if it lies back down and looks normal from the driveway.
- Tabs lift and crease. A loose tab folded back by a gust can fracture along the fold line. The crease reads as a faint horizontal line, and the mat behind it is broken for good.
- Fasteners work next. Repeated fluttering levers at the nail line. Nails back out, or the shingle mat tears through around the nail head, which is why a roof that survived the storm can shed tabs in lighter winds months later.
- The perimeter unzips. Once edge shingles, drip edge, or ridge caps go, wind gets underneath the field and can peel courses in sheets. This is why damage so often starts at eaves, rakes, and ridges.
- Deck and structure last. Sheathing panels and framing only fail in the strongest cores, which is precisely what survey teams look for when they assign the higher EF ratings.
A surveyed tornado track is a line on a map, but damaging wind is a field around it. Homes well away from any confirmed track can still take rear-flank gusts strong enough to break sealant bonds and crease tabs. If severe weather passed near you, the roof deserves a look even if the tornado did not officially visit your street. This is general information, not insurance advice.
