Nail Pops After a Hard Winter: A Field Note
Walk a roof in early spring and you will find them: small, hard bumps in the shingle field where a fastener has worked its way back up out of the deck. Nail pops look minor from the ground. Up close, each one is a future leak running on its own schedule. Here is what backs a nail out over a hard Macomb County winter, why a bump is not a cosmetic problem, and what separates a real repair from a dab of sealant.
This is a small thing, which is exactly why it gets ignored. A nail pop is a raised, coin-sized bump in a shingle field where the fastener beneath it has backed partway out of the deck. It rarely leaks the week it appears. It is patient, and Macomb County winters are exactly the kind of patient a marginal fastener cannot outlast. We see a cluster of them on nearly every spring inspection, and the pattern is worth writing down.
01 /What actually backs a nail out
A nail is only as good as the wood it is biting into, and roof deck wood is not static. It absorbs moisture and swells, dries and shrinks, warms in the sun and contracts overnight, season after season. A properly driven, properly placed nail rides that movement without much trouble. A few common conditions tip the balance toward a pop.
- High nailing. Shingles have a manufacturer-specified nailing zone, a defined strip where fasteners are supposed to land. A nail driven above that zone bites into a thinner section of shingle and has less holding power, so it takes less movement to start backing out.
- Angled or underdriven nails. A fastener driven at a slight angle, or one that never seated flush, sits proud of the deck from day one. Every freeze and thaw afterward just widens the head start.
- Deck movement. Framing lumber and sheathing expand and contract with temperature and humidity. Over enough cycles, that movement works against the nail shank the same way wiggling a nail in a board eventually loosens it.
- Snow and ice load. Weight on the deck flexes the sheathing slightly between rafters. That flex is small on any one day. Over a winter of accumulation and thaw, it adds another force pushing a marginal fastener upward.
None of this requires a defective shingle or a careless crew. It mostly requires ordinary wood movement acting on a fastener that had less margin than it needed, repeated enough times that the margin runs out. A hard winter, several stretches of freeze and thaw layered under snow load, is about as much repetition as a marginal nail sees in one season. 02 /Why a bump is a leak in waiting
A nail pop is not just cosmetic, because of where it sits and what it does to the shingle around it. As the shank backs out, the nail head lifts the shingle above it into a small tent. That tent has three problems at once. First, the lift breaks or strains the factory sealant bond at that spot, so the shingle no longer lies flat and locked to the course below it, a bond we cover in our note on cold weather sealing. Second, the raised shingle catches wind more easily than a flat one, which can start a lift working loose in the next gust. Third, and often the one that actually lets water in, is the hole itself. A nail that backs out far enough opens a path around its own shank, and wind-driven rain or meltwater can find that path before anyone on the ground notices the bump above it.
A pipe boot working loose is a related failure worth knowing, since it shares the same root cause: a fastener or seal losing its grip over repeated cycles rather than failing all at once.
Sealing over a nail pop without lifting the shingle and dealing with the fastener underneath does not fix the problem. It hides it. The shank is still free to keep working, the roofing cement traps moisture against the shingle back instead of the deck, and the next roofer to look at that spot cannot tell what is happening underneath the patch until they pull it apart. 03 /The real fix
The real fix starts by lifting the affected shingle enough to reach the fastener. A popped nail gets pulled, not just tapped back down, because a nail that has already backed out once has already proven the wood around it will not hold it reliably. A new fastener goes in nearby, inside the correct nailing zone, driven flush and straight. The original hole gets sealed with roofing cement from underneath the shingle, not smeared over the top of it, and if the shingle cracked or fractured where the old nail head was tenting it, that shingle gets replaced rather than resealed. It is more work than a dab of caulk. It is also the difference between a repair that holds through the next freeze-thaw season and one that reopens a year later.
04 /What it costs, and where to start
Nail pops are also one of the more affordable things we find on a roof, which is part of why they are worth catching early rather than letting a winter of freeze-thaw turn a handful of small pops into active leaks and damaged decking.
