Stand at the end of a driveway and look down a roof slope in low afternoon light, and buckling is hard to miss: a raised line runs vertically up the slope, sometimes just one, sometimes several evenly spaced rows apart, each one telegraphing straight through the shingles above it. It looks like a shingle problem because that is the surface you can see. It is almost never a shingle problem. Shingles are thin and flexible, and they take the shape of whatever is directly beneath them. When that shape has a ridge in it, the shingles show a ridge too.
01 /The short answer: buckling is a symptom, not the disease
A buckling ridge line means something under the shingles has changed shape or shifted position, and there are really only three candidates: the underlayment felt or synthetic sheet wrinkled before or during the shingle install, the deck panels themselves moved or swelled at a seam, or the deck took on moisture from below or above that later dried unevenly. All three produce the same visible symptom on the surface. Telling them apart is the difference between a localized fix and a bigger conversation, and it starts with knowing where the line falls relative to the panel layout underneath.
Buckling shows as straight vertical ridges running up the slope, usually spaced at regular intervals that match the underlayment roll width or the deck panel seams beneath. That regular spacing is the tell. Curling, by contrast, shows shingle by shingle as edges or centers lifting individually, with no relationship to what is underneath. The two failures look similar from the street and come from entirely different causes.
02 /Wrinkled underlayment: the most common cause
Underlayment is the felt or synthetic sheet rolled across the deck before the shingles go down, and it has to lie flat for the shingles above it to lie flat. Two things wrinkle it. First, installation conditions: underlayment rolled out on a humid morning, or over a deck that still had overnight moisture on it, can absorb enough water to expand slightly, and if the shingles go on before it fully dries and relaxes, the sheet is locked in place with a wave already built into it. Second, moisture that reaches the underlayment later, through a slow roof leak or condensation from the attic side, can cause the same swelling after the fact, with the ridge appearing weeks or months after the roof was installed rather than on day one.
Either way, the underlayment ridge is permanent once the shingles are nailed over it. Shingles do not flatten a wrinkle underneath them; they conform to it and hold that shape through freeze-thaw cycles, which can make the ridge line more pronounced over a Michigan winter as the material contracts around the raised fold.
What an underlayment-caused ridge tends to look like
These ridges are usually a single line or a small cluster, not evenly spaced across the whole slope, and they often run in a slightly irregular path rather than a perfectly straight one, since the wrinkle in the felt formed wherever the roll happened to bunch up. They can also show up unevenly between slopes on the same roof if one crew rolled underlayment on a drier morning than another, which is a detail that surprises homeowners who assume the whole roof was installed under identical conditions on the same day.
03 /Deck movement at panel joints
The second cause lives one layer deeper, at the wood deck itself. Roof decks are built from sheets of OSB or plywood, and each sheet has a factory-recommended gap left at the joints to allow for seasonal expansion. If that gap was closed up tight during the original deck installation, or if the panels have swelled from humidity over the years, the edges of adjacent sheets can push against each other and tent upward slightly at the seam. That small lift in the deck telegraphs straight through the underlayment and the shingles above it as a ridge running the length of the panel joint, which is why buckling lines are so often perfectly straight and spaced at four-foot intervals, the standard width of a sheet of decking.
This form of buckling is a deck-level issue, and sealing or reflashing at the surface will not resolve it, because the ridge is being pushed up from underneath by the panel itself rather than by anything happening in the shingle layer. From the attic side, a panel-joint ridge is easy to confirm: the raised line on the surface will line up directly with a visible seam between two sheets of decking, which is a straightforward way to separate this cause from a wrinkled underlayment fold that has no relationship to the panel layout at all.

04 /Why buckling often shows up in the first year
One detail that surprises homeowners: buckling frequently appears within the first year of a new roof rather than developing slowly over its life. That timing points straight back to installation-day conditions. Underlayment installed over a deck that had not fully dried from a recent rain, or shingles nailed down before a humid morning's moisture had a chance to release from the felt, lock a wrinkle in place almost immediately. A new deck installed with panels butted tight against each other, without the expansion gap the sheathing manufacturer calls for, can also start pushing at the seams within the first few seasonal humidity swings. If a roof less than a year or two old is showing ridge lines, that is worth raising directly with whoever installed it, since it is often traceable to a specific step in that job rather than to age or weather.
Older roofs can buckle too, usually from a slower moisture source: an attic that runs humid without adequate ventilation, or a leak that has been wetting the deck at one spot for a season or more before anyone noticed a ceiling stain. In those cases the buckling is really a signal that the moisture problem needs solving first, or the repair will not hold.
05 /Buckling versus curling: a different failure entirely
It is worth being precise about the difference, because the fixes are not interchangeable. Buckling looks completely different: it runs in straight, usually vertical lines, follows the layout of whatever is underneath, and can appear on a roof that is only months old, which curling almost never does. If you are trying to tell the two apart from the ground, curling looks like individual shingles misbehaving; buckling looks like the whole roof surface has a fold pressed into it from below.

A buckled shingle is not the problem. It is the messenger. The problem is whatever shape changed underneath it, and that is what a repair actually has to address.
06 /What repair actually involves
The repair path depends entirely on which cause is at work, which is why an inspection that opens the shingles at the ridge line, and checks the attic side of the deck, matters more here than on a lot of repair calls. A single wrinkled section of underlayment, confirmed dry and isolated, can often be addressed by pulling the shingles back along that line, cutting out and relaying the affected underlayment flat, and reinstalling the shingles over it. That is a localized, contained repair.
A panel-joint ridge caused by tight deck seams is a different scope: it usually means relieving the joint, which can mean trimming the panel edge to restore the expansion gap or, in some cases, replacing the affected sheet if it has swollen enough that trimming will not resolve it cleanly. If the underlying cause is ongoing moisture, whether from an attic ventilation shortfall or a slow leak that has been feeding the deck for a while, the repair has to include solving that source, because relaying shingles over a deck that is still wet or still under-ventilated buys very little time before the ridge returns.
Whatever the cause, expect the shingles pulled up around a buckled section to need replacing rather than reusing, since removing a sealed shingle usually damages the tab or its seal strip.
