You do not need a moisture meter to spot this problem, you need to look at the right things after the next real rain. Start outside, at grade. 04 / THE OPTIONSComparing your four extension options
Once you know the target distance, the question is which hardware gets you there without becoming a tripping hazard, a mower obstacle, or an eyesore. Four options cover nearly every yard.
1. Splash blocks
A splash block is the simplest option: a shaped concrete or plastic tray set under the downspout mouth that spreads the stream out and directs it a couple of feet away instead of letting it drill a hole in the mulch. It is the cheapest fix and the easiest to get wrong, because a splash block that is not angled correctly, or that has been kicked out of place by a mower or a dog, stops doing its job silently. On a sloped lot with generous clearance, a well-set splash block can be enough. On a flat lot or one with only a few feet before a walkway or the neighbor's property line, it usually is not, because a couple of feet almost never reaches the 4 to 6 foot target on its own.
2. Rigid extensions
A rigid extension is a straight or gently angled metal or plastic pipe section that locks onto the downspout outlet and carries water a fixed distance, commonly 4 to 6 feet, before it discharges. It holds its shape, does not sag or collect debris the way flexible tubing can, and is the most durable above-grade option for a permanent installation. The tradeoff is that a rigid pipe sitting across a lawn is exactly what it sounds like, a rigid pipe sitting across a lawn, which is where the hinged version below usually wins in practice.
3. Roll-out or retractable sleeves
A roll-out extension is a flexible, accordion-style sleeve that lies flat and compact against the ground until water pressure from the downspout pushes it open and unrolls it several feet away, then it retracts once the flow stops. These solve the tripping and mowing problem neatly, because there is nothing standing proud of the lawn between storms, but the moving parts and the fabric-style material mean they eventually wear, kink, or fail to fully retract, and they are more of a maintenance item than a rigid pipe.
4. Hinged flip-up extensions
A hinged extension is a rigid pipe on a hinge at the downspout outlet, held down in the working position by the weight of the water or a simple latch, and it lifts up out of the way when you need to mow or trim under it. It is the practical middle ground for a lawn that gets regular mowing traffic: rigid enough to hold its angle and reach a real distance, but not a permanent obstacle. 05 / THE CLIMATEMichigan soil, freeze, and mowing realities
Southeast Michigan's clay-heavy soils are slow to absorb water compared to sandier ground, which is exactly why the distance target leans longer here rather than shorter. Water that has nowhere fast to drain sits at the surface longer, and if that surface is right next to your foundation, it has more time to find a crack, a cove joint, or a porous stretch of block before it finally soaks away.
