Smooth-wall PVC drain pipe, the same family as what runs under a sink, is the sturdier of the two common choices. The interior is slick, so debris and silt slide through rather than snagging on ribs, and the fittings glue into permanent, leak-tight joints. 03 / THE OUTLETWhere the water surfaces: emitters and daylighting

A buried pipe has to end somewhere, and the two common endings behave very differently. The first is a simple daylight outlet: the pipe just emerges at grade, ideally at a point on the property that slopes away and lets the water spread out and soak in or run off toward a ditch or storm system, never back toward the house. It is the cheapest and lowest-maintenance option because there is nothing mechanical to fail, but it only works where the yard actually has somewhere for the water to go and where the outlet will not become a muddy scar in the lawn every time it rains.

The second is a pop-up emitter: a small spring-loaded cap set flush with the grass that lies closed under normal conditions and lifts open under the pressure of water arriving from the pipe, then closes again once the flow stops. It keeps the yard looking uninterrupted and keeps animals and debris from crawling in from the surface, which is the main reason people choose it over an open daylight pipe. Winter freeze at the emitter

The buried run itself sits below the frost-affected zone for most of its length and generally is not the problem in winter. The exposed point at the very end is. A pop-up emitter sits right at grade, in the coldest, most exposed few inches of the whole system, and it is exactly where meltwater from a thaw is trying to exit right as the ground around it refreezes overnight. When the emitter or the last foot of pipe freezes solid, the entire run backs up behind it with nowhere to go, and the water finds its way out at the weakest point instead, often back up and out at the downspout base, right against the foundation it was buried to protect.

Clogs you cannot see

Every buried line eventually collects fine grit, shingle granules, and whatever gets past the gutter, and unlike an open gutter or a surface splash block, none of that is visible while it happens. A gutter that is clogging shows you a curtain of overflow.
