Of all the components on a roof, drip edge gets the least credit for the amount of trouble it prevents. It is a narrow L-shaped or T-shaped strip of metal, usually aluminum or galvanized steel, that runs along the eaves and rakes under the shingles and over the fascia board. Most homeowners could not describe it if asked, and most never think about it until an eave starts rotting from the inside out. In a climate that spends four months a year cycling between freeze and thaw, that narrow strip is one of the reasons an eave survives the winter in good shape or does not.

Both jobs sound minor until you picture the alternative: water running down the underside of a bare wood edge, over and over, for years.

Shingles shed water down the roof slope. Drip edge is the piece that carries that water the last few inches, past the fascia and into the gutter, instead of letting it creep back underneath the edge by capillary action.

In a Michigan winter, drip edge has a second job layered on top of the first. It sits directly over the ice and water barrier membrane at the eave, the self-adhering waterproof layer required in ice dam prone climates, and the two work as a system. 04 / THE CODEWhy drip edge is not optional anymore

Drip edge at eaves and rakes is a requirement under current residential building code adopted in Michigan, not a builder upgrade. Michigan Residential Code 2015, section R905.2.8.5 (drip edge) spells out where it goes and how it laps with the underlayment: over the ice barrier membrane at the eave, and under the underlayment at the rake, so water is always shed onto the metal rather than up underneath it at either edge.

That code requirement exists because the damage pattern in the previous section was common enough, on enough houses, over enough winters, to justify a fix that costs very little relative to the roof as a whole. A proper reroof today includes drip edge as a matter of course. A home that has never had one, because it was built or last reroofed before the requirement was standard, is simply carrying an older assembly than current code expects.

05 / THE CHECKHow to tell if your eaves are protected

You do not need to get on the roof to get a first read on your own drip edge. From the ground, look up at the eave line where the shingles overhang the gutter. A thin, straight metal edge visible just under the shingle tabs, usually the same color as the gutter or a neutral white or bronze, is drip edge doing its job. If the shingle edge instead looks like it simply ends in open air with no visible metal lip, that eave may never have had one installed.

  • Look for a clean metal lip at the shingle edge above the gutter, not bare shingle overhanging into open air.
  • Check the fascia board itself for soft spots, peeling paint, or a slightly wavy edge, all common signs of long-term moisture behind it.
  • Note any staining on the soffit underneath the overhang, especially in patches rather than an even discoloration.
  • Compare slopes. A north-facing eave that holds snow and ice far longer than the rest of the roof is the slope most likely to show trouble first if drip edge is missing or failing.

A ground check is a reasonable first look, but it will not catch corroded or loose drip edge that still looks intact from a distance, or short sections that were skipped during a past patch repair.
