That warm, moist air is coming from inside your house, riding upward through gaps in the ceiling plane, called bypasses, and settling against the coldest surfaces in the attic, which are almost always the roof deck and the nails that puncture it from the shingles above.
Frost on nail tips or sheathing is not proof of a roof leak. It is proof that warm, humid indoor air is reaching a cold surface in your attic, which points back to air sealing and ventilation, not to a hole in the shingles.
That distinction matters because the fix is completely different depending on which one you have. A roof leak calls for a repair on the shingles or flashing. Frost calls for a look at where household air is escaping into the attic and whether the attic is ventilating well enough to carry that moisture back out before it accumulates. Metal conducts cold far faster than wood does, which is exactly why roofing nails are usually the first and clearest place frost shows up in an attic. A nail driven through the deck and into a shingle above sits with its point exposed to the full outdoor temperature on one end, and that cold travels down the shaft into the attic side almost as fast as the outdoor air changes. Plywood or OSB sheathing insulates slightly better than solid metal, so the deck itself often needs a longer cold stretch before it frosts as heavily as the nail points do.
The nail as a thermometer
Picture every exposed nail tip as its own tiny thermometer reading the coldest temperature in the attic at that moment. When humid attic air brushes against a nail point that has dropped below the dew point, the water vapor in that air condenses directly onto the metal, and because the metal is below freezing, it condenses as frost rather than as a bead of liquid water. A field of frosted nail heads across the attic is a visual map of where the coldest surfaces are and, indirectly, of how much moisture is present in the air reaching them.
This is also why frost concentrated directly above known bypasses, like recessed lights, the attic hatch, or a plumbing chase, is more meaningful than an even dusting spread across the whole deck. An even, light coating across the entire underside of the roof is often closer to ordinary attic humidity working against cold sheathing on a hard freeze, which is a milder and more common finding.

Not all attic frost carries the same weight. A rough read on severity helps you decide whether to watch it, seal a few obvious bypasses yourself, or call for an inspection.
- Light, scattered frost on nail tips only. A thin white coating limited to the nail points, especially after a stretch of single-digit or teens overnight temperatures, is common in attics with reasonable but not perfect air sealing. It is worth noting and rechecking after future cold snaps, but by itself it is not an emergency.
- Heavier frost spreading onto the sheathing. When frost moves off the nail tips and coats visible patches of the plywood or OSB itself, more moisture is reaching the deck than the attic is managing to vent away. This is a reasonable trigger to look for the nearby bypass and to check whether soffit and ridge ventilation are actually open and balanced.
- Frost coating large sections of the deck, especially near the ridge. Location matters as much as thickness. Frost worst on the north-facing slope, where the sun never has a chance to warm the deck during the day, is a normal pattern in Macomb County winters and does not necessarily mean anything is wrong beyond ordinary cold-climate physics. Frost sitting quietly on a cold nail tip is inert. At that point every crystal of frost that built up over the cold snap turns to liquid water all at once, and it does not know to fall straight down onto a towel.
