Standing water and a dirt line at the low spot

Where water lingers, it leaves a residue: a darker stain or a line of settled grit and dirt inside the gutter, and often a stripe of algae or mud on the outside face below it. A run that drains properly is scoured clean by its own flow. A run with a dead spot collects a tide line exactly where the pitch went flat, which is usually the sag between two hangers or a stretch that was hung level to begin with.

Overflow in the middle of a run, not just the ends

When a clean gutter overflows in a hard rain, size and downspout count are the usual suspects. But overflow that happens partway along a run, away from the corners and outlets, points at pitch. Water backing up over the front lip in the middle of a straight stretch means it is not moving toward a downspout the way it should. Water that stands in a low spot through a cold snap freezes, and the ice builds on itself with each freeze and thaw until a heavy ribbon of it loads the gutter right where the trough is already weakest.
