Each stage is worse and more expensive to fix than the one before it, and the whole sequence can be running before a single interior stain appears.

02 / THE MECHANISMHow water gets under the shingles in the first place

Asphalt shingles overlap like fish scales, and that overlap only sheds water moving one direction: down. When a dam ponds water above the lowest courses, the pressure of that standing water pushes it sideways and upward, into the lap and against the grain of the design. Water finds the nail penetrations and the seams between tabs, and it wicks under the shingle by capillary action even without any wind or storm pressure behind it. No storm is required. A quiet, sunny afternoon that thaws snow into an ice dam already in place is enough.

Underlayment: the last line before the deck

Underneath the shingles is a layer of underlayment, and in ice dam prone areas, code calls for a self-adhering ice barrier membrane at the eaves specifically because standing water is expected there in a Michigan winter. That membrane is a sheet of rubberized asphalt that self-seals around nail penetrations, and it is genuinely good at doing one job: stopping water that reaches it from continuing on to the deck. It buys time, but it is not indestructible, and it is not everywhere it might need to be. Left alone across several winters, the same section absorbs water again and again without ever fully drying between events, and the wood begins to delaminate along its layers, soften underfoot, and eventually rot outright. Framing: when the damage goes past the deck

Insulation: wet, compressed, and no longer working

Water that gets past the deck lands directly on the attic insulation below it. Fiberglass batts and blown-in cellulose both rely on trapped air to resist heat flow, and soaked insulation loses that trapped air along with a large share of its rated R-value. Wet insulation also compresses under its own added weight and rarely fully re-lofts once it dries, so the loss is not always temporary. A section of attic insulation that has been through two or three ice dam seasons can be doing noticeably less work than the rating on the bag, in exactly the area of the roof where heat loss already caused the ice dam to form. That is a discouraging feedback loop: the wetter the insulation gets, the more heat escapes there, and the worse next winter's dam tends to be in the same spot.

03 / WHY IT TRAVELSWhy the stain shows up in a bedroom, not at the eave

Homeowners are often surprised that a ceiling stain appears well inside the house, nowhere near the eave where the ice was visible. Water does not fall straight down from where it enters. Once it is on top of the drywall or running along a truss, it follows the path of least resistance rather than the shortest path down, which usually means traveling along the top chord of a truss or a rafter until it hits a low point, a nail, a light fixture box, a bath fan housing, or a seam in the drywall, and dripping or wicking through there instead. A dam at the northeast corner of a roof can, in principle, show its first visible sign of damage over a closet on the opposite side of the room below, simply because that is where the framing happened to carry the water.

The stain on the ceiling tells you where the water finally gave up, not where it got in. Tracing the actual entry point is most of the job.

Drywall itself contributes to the mismatch. The paper facing on drywall wicks moisture sideways along a seam or a joint compound line before it ever saturates enough to show as a visible stain, so by the time a discoloration appears on the ceiling, the water has often already spread further than the stain suggests.
