A higher R-value means heat has a harder time conducting straight through the insulation from the warm side to the cold side. What R-value does not measure is air movement. Heat that rides along with moving air, through a gap around a light fixture, a chimney chase, an attic hatch, or the top plate of an exterior wall, is convective and infiltration heat loss, and it bypasses the insulation layer almost entirely rather than conducting through it. An attic can carry a full R-60 of fluffy insulation and still lose enormous amounts of heat if the air sealing underneath it is poor, because the warm, moist house air is simply flowing around the insulation through the gaps rather than being forced to conduct through it. Where this shows up in a Michigan winter is unmistakable. Heat that bypasses the insulation and reaches the underside of the roof deck warms that deck from below, which melts the bottom layer of the snowpack even when the outdoor air is well below freezing. 05 / THE RULER TESTA five-minute check at your own attic hatch

A homeowner does not need a contractor to get a rough read on where their attic stands. Open the hatch, and if the space is safe to enter, step only on the joists, never on the insulation between them, since ceiling drywall will not hold weight. Bring a tape measure or a ruler and a flashlight.

  • Measure the depth of insulation at two or three spots, not just near the hatch, since depth can vary noticeably across a single attic
  • Note the material: loose, granular blown cellulose looks gray-brown and settles slightly over time; blown or batt fiberglass is pink, yellow, or white and fluffier

  • Check whether the depth is even across the attic, or whether it is thin near the eaves, compacted near foot traffic paths, or missing entirely in spots

This ruler test is a starting estimate, not a substitute for a real inspection. A tape measure tells you how deep the insulation is. It does not tell you whether the air underneath it is sealed, which is usually the bigger question.

06 / THE HONEST PARTDiminishing returns: why the last inch matters less than the first

Insulation performance does not scale in a straight line. The jump from bare ceiling drywall to R-19 stops a huge share of conductive heat loss, because you are going from almost no resistance to a meaningful amount.
