02 / FALLThe pre-winter push, September through November
Fall is the highest-leverage window on this whole calendar. Everything you do here either prevents an ice dam or feeds one, and the work is easier and cheaper before the first hard freeze than at any other point in the year.
Clear gutters and downspouts
A gutter packed with leaves cannot carry meltwater away from the eave, and a clogged downspout backs water up under the shingles at the exact spot ice dams start. Clear them after the leaves are down, not before, or you will be doing it twice. Check that downspout extensions still carry water at least a few feet away from the foundation while you are up there; a short or disconnected extension turns a gutter problem into a basement problem once the ground freezes.
Check attic insulation depth and airflow
Thin or compressed insulation lets heat escape into the attic, and that escaped heat is what melts snow from below and builds ice dams at the eaves. Confirm your insulation depth and that soffit vents are not blocked by insulation or debris, since blocked intake starves the ridge or box vents above it even if those vents themselves are clear. Seal known air bypasses
Bath fan ducts that dump into the attic instead of outside, gaps around recessed lights, and an unsealed attic hatch are the most common heat leaks we find. Sealing them before winter is a fall job, not a February job, because you want the attic cold all winter, not just on the day you remember. A duct that vents warm, moist bathroom air straight into the attic is a double problem: it feeds the ice dam and it feeds condensation and frost on the underside of the deck at the same time.
Trim overhanging limbs and stage the roof rake
Branches that scrape shingles in wind wear through the granule coat faster than weather alone, and a limb that comes down under snow load can do real damage. While you are at it, get the roof rake out of summer storage. You will want it within reach the first time snow sits heavy on the eaves, and a rake bought in November after the first storm is a rake bought at a picked-over shelf.

03 / MIDWINTERWatch, do not climb, December through February
Once the cold sets in, the job changes from prevention to monitoring. This is not the season to be on a ladder or on the roof itself; cold shingles are brittle, footing is unpredictable under snow, and the useful information is almost all visible from safe ground.
The physics behind what you are watching for is simple even if the fix is not: snow on the roof insulates itself, so the bottom layer against warm shingles melts even while the air above stays well below freezing. That meltwater runs down toward the eave, and the eave, unlike the rest of the roof, sits past the heated wall line and stays cold. The water refreezes there, and each cycle adds another layer of ice until a dam has formed that ponds water back under the shingles above it. Watch for icicles at the eaves
A few small icicles are normal. Thick icicles that grow day over day, or a visible ridge of ice building at the gutter line, is the early sign of an ice dam forming. That is the moment to act, either with a roof rake to pull snow load off the eaves from the ground, or with a call, not the moment to wait and see.
Track snow depth after storms
Deep, wet snow is heavy, and it is also the fuel an ice dam needs. After any significant snowfall, a rake pass on the first few feet of eave reduces both the load on the structure and the meltwater available to refreeze. Do a five-minute attic check on the coldest nights
Frost on the nail tips poking through the roof deck, or on the north-facing sheathing, tells you moisture is reaching the attic and freezing there. 04 / THE THAWThaw season leak vigilance, late February into April
This is the window when southeast Michigan gets its most punishing weather for a roof: repeated freeze-thaw cycles, sometimes several in a single week, each one melting snow into water that finds its way under shingles and then refreezes overnight. Watch the gutter line for granule loss
Repeated freeze-thaw cycling is hard on aging shingles, and a heavier-than-normal load of granules in the gutter or downspout splash after a thaw is a sign the shingle surface took real wear over the winter. One thaw season with heavy granule loss is worth noting; several years of it is worth a professional look at remaining shingle life. Keeping a rough year-to-year note, even just a phone photo of the downspout splash each spring, gives you a trend rather than a single data point, and a trend is what actually tells you whether a shingle roof is aging on schedule or aging early.
Storm damage is a separate category from ordinary thaw-season wear, and it is worth telling apart. A hard freeze-thaw cycle wears a roof gradually over years. Some exterior dripping from icicles and eave ice as it melts is normal and not a roof problem. Water appearing inside the house, staining, or a steady drip from a light fixture or ceiling seam is not. 05 / SPRINGThe walkaround after the last freeze
Once nighttime temperatures reliably stay above freezing, do the one walkaround of the year that tells you what the winter actually cost your roof. This is the single most useful maintenance visit on the calendar, because it is the first time since fall that the roof is both fully visible and safe to be near.
Ground-level visual sweep
Walk the perimeter and look up: lifted or missing shingle tabs, especially on the north-facing slope that holds ice longest, bent gutters or fascia from ice weight, and any granule buildup at the downspout outlets. Binoculars help more than a ladder does at this stage.
Clean gutters again

07 / THE LIMITWhen a checklist is not enough
