03 / MEASURING ITThree ways to find your own roof's pitch
You do not need to climb up and risk a fall to get a workable number. Here are three methods, roughly in order of how safe and available they are, each good enough to have an informed conversation with a contractor.
1. From the ground with a level and a tape measure
If you can see a gable end or a section of eave clearly, hold a torpedo level or a straight board perfectly horizontal against the roof surface, mark exactly 12 inches out from where it touches the roof, then measure straight down from that mark to the roof surface. That vertical distance in inches is your rise, and the ratio to the 12 inches you measured out is your pitch. This is the same basic method a framer uses on a rafter, just done from a ladder or the ground with a longer level or a straightedge.
2. From inside the attic, on an exposed rafter
If your attic has exposed rafters or a ridge board you can reach safely, this is usually the most accurate do-it-yourself method, because you are working on dry, stationary wood instead of a roof surface, and there is no weather or footing risk. Lay a level along the underside of a rafter, find the 12-inch mark, and measure the vertical rise the same way as the ground method. A framing square held against the rafter with one leg level gives the same reading and is the classic carpenter's tool for the job.
3. From existing paperwork, when it exists
Some homes have the pitch already documented: original builder plans, a truss engineering stamp in the attic, or occasionally an appraisal or listing description.
