Nobody asks about starter strip shingles when they are shopping for a new roof. They ask about the field shingle color, the brand, maybe the warranty length. But the starter course, a single row of purpose-made shingles installed along the eaves and rakes before the first visible course goes down, is doing a job none of the flashier decisions can do: it is the anchor that keeps wind from getting a grip on the roof's edge in the first place. Skip it, fake it, or cut it wrong, and the most expensive shingle in the world will not save you from an edge blow-off.

Unlike a field shingle, it has no cutouts and no tabs. That bond is the whole point. Wind does not usually peel a shingle from the middle of the field first. It gets a finger under a loose edge, and once it has that finger, it works the shingle upward like a pry bar. A properly sealed starter course denies wind that first foothold along the two edges of the roof where it is most likely to try, the eaves and the rakes, which is exactly where uplift forces concentrate hardest.

Wind moving across a roof plane behaves differently depending on where it is. In the middle of the field, air pressure is relatively even and shingles are held down on all sides by the courses around them. Purpose-made starter strip is not an expensive product, but it is a separate line item, and on a roof where a crew is trying to shave cost or move fast, it is a tempting one to skip. The workaround is old and still common enough to have a name in the trade: take a standard 3-tab shingle, cut off the tabs, flip or trim the piece, and lay the leftover strip down as a homemade starter course.
The problem is not that the material is thinner or cheaper. The problem is that a cut-up field shingle was never designed to be a starter, and it usually shows it in one of two ways. Its sealant band, if it has one at all in the right place, is positioned for a field shingle's overlap pattern, not a starter's, so the bond can land in the wrong spot entirely relative to the first course above it. And a hand-cut edge is inconsistent piece to piece in a way a factory strip never is, which shows up as uneven sealing along the eave line even when the crew is trying to do it carefully.
You cannot see a bad starter course once the roof is shingled. You can only see what it did after the next windstorm.
This is a corner cut in the truest sense: it saves a small amount of material cost and a small amount of time, it is invisible on the finished roof, and it does not show up as a problem on day one, or in month one.
