Water finding its way to a light fixture is the one roof leak that can hurt you before it ever rots a rafter. A ceiling stain is a tomorrow problem. Water and electricity meeting inside a light box is a right-now problem, and the sequence you follow here matters more than almost anywhere else in the house. So this page is deliberately short and blunt: the safe order first, the where-is-it-coming-from detective work second. Do not flip the light switch to test it, and do not touch the fixture, the bulb, or the water pooling around it. Go to the breaker panel and cut power to that circuit first. Here is the whole thing in one breath. The moment you see water at a light fixture, a ceiling fan, or a recessed can light, treat that fixture as energized and dangerous until you have killed the circuit at the panel. Do not flip the switch, because flipping a wet switch is exactly the wrong bet to make. Do not stand in a puddle beneath it, do not touch the fixture to catch drips, and do not unscrew a wet bulb. Get to the breaker box, shut off the circuit that feeds that room, and if you are not sure which breaker it is, shut off the main. Only then is it safe to start containing water and hunting the leak.
That order is not overcaution. Household wiring runs straight into a light box, and water is a conductor. A fixture that looks dead can still be live if the switch is off but the circuit is not, and water bridging the connections can put current where you do not expect it. 02 / THE MECHANICSWhy water ends up at the light in the first place
Water almost never drips straight down from the spot it entered. It comes in at the roof, runs along the underside of the decking, tracks down a rafter, crosses the top of the ceiling, and then looks for the first opening or low point to fall through. A light fixture is very often that opening. The ceiling box is a hole cut in the drywall, the wiring penetration gives water a path, and the fixture itself is a natural collection cup hanging at the low point. Recessed can lights are the worst offenders, because each one is a bucket-shaped housing set into the ceiling that gathers traveling water and funnels it straight to the bulb.
This is why the fixture that is dripping is a poor guide to where the leak actually is. The water may have started ten feet away at a failed pipe boot, a lifted shingle, or a flashing detail that pulled loose, then run downhill inside the ceiling until the light box gave it somewhere to go. 03 / THE PROCEDUREThe first five minutes, in order
Once the power to that circuit is off and confirmed off, work this list top to bottom. It is short on purpose.
- Confirm the breaker is off. Kill the circuit at the panel, or the main if you are unsure. If any part of the fixture is still glowing or a switched lamp on that circuit still works, the wrong breaker is off. Do not proceed until the power is truly down.
- Keep everyone clear of the wet fixture. Move people and pets out from under it. Do not touch the fixture, the bulb, or the water on the floor to mop it up yet.
- Contain the water low, not at the fixture. Set a bucket on the floor to catch drips and lay towels or a tarp around it. Catch the water where it lands, not by holding anything up to the ceiling.
- Photograph everything before you clean up. The wet fixture, the ceiling stain, the puddle, the room. Ground-level photos only. If a claim follows later, this is the evidence, and cleanup erases it.

04 / THE TRIAGEIs it the roof, plumbing, or HVAC?
With the power off and the drip contained, you can start narrowing the source, because the answer changes who you call. A few quick tells point you in the right direction, though none is proof on its own. Water that appears only during or right after rain and snowmelt, and that slows when the weather clears, points to the roof. Water that runs steadily regardless of the weather, or worsens when a shower or an upstairs bathroom is in use, points to plumbing. Clear water on a hot, muggy day near a ceiling under an attic air handler can be HVAC condensate rather than a roof leak at all.
Location helps too. A fixture directly below a bathroom, a laundry, or a kitchen has plumbing as a live suspect. 05 / TWO TRADESWhen you also need an electrician
Stopping the roof leak fixes the cause, but water that has already been inside a light box or a wiring run can leave an electrical problem behind even after the ceiling dries. The roofer stops the water. An electrician clears the fixture and the circuit. Those are two different jobs, and for a soaked fixture you often need both.
- The fixture was clearly submerged or full of water. A ceiling box or a can housing that held standing water should be inspected and, in many cases, the fixture replaced before that circuit is trusted again.
- The breaker keeps tripping, or a GFCI will not reset. That is the safety system doing its job. It is a sign of moisture in the circuit, not a nuisance to override. Leave it off and get an electrician.
- You see scorching, smell burning, or hear buzzing. Any of these means stop, keep the power off, and treat it as urgent. Do not re-energize the circuit to check.
- The fixture worked oddly before the leak was found. Flickering, a warm switch plate, or a light that dimmed on its own around the time water appeared all warrant an electrician's look once the roof is handled.

It is a reason to respect the order: power off, roof fixed, then an electrician clears the fixture before you flip that breaker back on.
