Drip Edge Is Code in Michigan: A Note From the Permit Desk
Drip edge is one line in the residential code that almost no homeowner ever reads, until a reroof estimate either lists it or quietly leaves it off. Here is what the code actually asks for, why the detail earned a code section at all, and what its absence looks like once enough winters have gone by.
Most of what a reroof estimate lists is visible from the driveway: shingle color, squares, whether the old layer comes off or gets covered. Drip edge is not that kind of line item. It is a strip of formed metal tucked under the shingle at the eaves and rakes, and a homeowner may never see it at all. It is also, under the residential code Michigan uses, not optional. This note covers what the requirement says, why it exists, and what its absence tends to look like a decade later.
01 /What the code actually requires
Michigan builds to the Michigan Residential Code, its own adoption of the International Residential Code with local amendments. Within it, asphalt shingle roof coverings carry a specific provision requiring metal drip edge along the eaves and rakes, the gutter-line edge and the sloped edges up the roof's sides. The provision sets minimum expectations for the metal, how far it extends onto the deck and over the fascia, how much adjoining pieces overlap, and how it is fastened. We will not invent the exact section number, edition year, or dimensions from memory here, because a stale citation does a homeowner more harm than an honest gap. What is not in question: drip edge is required metal, not felt or shingle overhang alone, at both edges that shed water. A roofer who calls it a nice upgrade rather than a code item is either mistaken or hoping you will not ask twice.
02 /Why the detail earned a code section
Shingles are good at shedding water down a slope. They are not designed to control where that water lands once it clears the last course. Without metal drip edge, water sheeting off the eave can cling to the underside of the tab by surface tension and travel backward onto the fascia and raw deck edge instead of dropping into the gutter. Wind-driven rain makes it worse at the rakes, pushing water sideways under the shingle edge onto exposed deck and trim. Metal drip edge breaks that path, giving water a hard edge to let go of cleanly, away from the wood underneath. That is also why the detail sits next to underlayment and ice barrier requirements in the code, not a finish-and-trim chapter: it is water management doing a structural protection job, even though it looks like a $2 strip of metal from the ground.
03 /What a missing drip edge looks like years later
A roof without proper drip edge rarely fails the week it is installed. It fails on a schedule measured in seasons, as the same wood gets wet and dries, freeze after freeze. What we see on inspections where the detail got skipped tends to follow a pattern: soft, discolored fascia at the eave line, paint peeling where the shingle overhangs, rafter tail rot hiding behind gutters that looked fine from below, and a soft or delaminating deck edge along the rakes that a hand can flex before the eye catches it. None of that reads as a roof problem at first glance. It reads as a fascia or gutter problem, until someone lifts a shingle course and finds the actual cause underneath.
Drip edge is cheap material but real labor time at every eave and rake. On a rushed reroof it is an easy item to leave off, since the shingles still look complete without it. If you are getting quotes, ask directly whether drip edge is included and named on the proposal, not assumed.
04 /What this means for a Macomb County reroof
The fix going forward is simple and cheap relative to almost anything else on a roof: install the drip edge the code already requires, correctly lapped and fastened, on every reroof. The harder question is what to do with a house that has gone years without it. If fascia or deck-edge rot has already set in, that is a repair question, and repairs run $350 to $3,200, with larger carpentry repairs able to run higher depending on how much wood the water reached.
