After the Storm: How to Read NWS Reports for Your Area
Every time a storm crosses Macomb County, the National Weather Service builds a public paper trail: spotter reports the same day, damage surveys within the week, and a certified database entry a few months later. Roofers pull these documents constantly. Homeowners almost never do. This note shows you where each one lives, what the jargon means, and how to save what you find.
When we inspect a roof after a storm, the first thing we check is not the roof. It is the record. Public weather data tells us what actually crossed a neighborhood, how hard the wind blew, and what size the hail was, before anyone climbs a ladder. All of it is free, all of it is public, and none of it requires anything more than knowing where to look. A homeowner who pulls the same documents starts any insurance conversation from the same footing a contractor does, because the question every adjuster asks first, what happened and when, may already be answered on the federal record. 01 /The three places the record lives
The National Weather Service publishes storm data in three layers, and each one serves a different moment. The first layer is the Local Storm Report, or LSR. These are the raw, same-day reports that trained spotters, police, and the public phone in while a storm is still moving: a measured gust here, quarter size hail there, a tree down on a named road. After significant events, NWS meteorologists walk the damage in person and publish findings, including tornado ratings and estimated peak winds, in public statements. The third layer is the Storm Events Database, maintained by the National Centers for Environmental Information. 02 /Reading the jargon
The products are plain text, but the vocabulary trips people up. A short glossary covers most of it:
- Measured versus estimated. A measured gust came off an actual instrument. An estimated gust is a trained judgment from damage or observation. Both count, but a measured number carries more weight in a claim file.
- Hail sizes. Reports use coin and ball comparisons with inch equivalents: quarter size is about 1 inch, golf ball about 1.75 inches. Where the damage threshold for a shingle sits is its own question, and our note on what size hail damages a roof covers it in full.
- EF ratings. Tornado strength is rated after the fact, from surveyed damage, on the Enhanced Fujita scale. The rating comes from the survey, not from radar.
- Preliminary versus final. Same-day reports are unverified by definition. The Storm Events Database is the reviewed version, and entries typically appear a few months after the event.
03 /Saving what you find
Public does not mean permanent in a form you can grab at midnight before an adjuster meeting. When you find a report that touches your area, save it the same day: a screenshot or printed PDF, the page address, and the date you pulled it. File those alongside your own dated photos of the roof and yard. What you are building is a simple chain: the federal record says a damaging event crossed your area on a specific date, and your photos say your property showed damage after it. A same-day storm report is evidence, not a verdict. Reports can be revised, and the absence of a report on your exact street does not mean your roof was spared; spotter coverage is thin between reporting points. Carriers may weigh preliminary and certified data differently, and policies limit how long you have to file after a date of loss. This is general information, not legal or insurance advice.
04 /What the record cannot tell you
The one thing no database shows is your own roof. A report of 70 mph winds two miles away establishes that the event happened, not that your shingles creased.
