Bathroom exhaust fans are one of the few pieces of a house that homeowners almost never think about, because the whole point is that you flip a switch, hear a hum, and the steam clears.   1. Look outside for a roof or wall cap. Walk the perimeter of the house and look at the roof plane above the bathroom and the gable walls nearby. A properly vented fan terminates at a small roof-mounted cap with a flap or louvers, or a similar cap set into a gable wall. If you cannot find a termination point anywhere near the bathroom's location, that is the first sign the duct may be ending short.
  2. Run the fan and go feel for it. With the fan on, go outside and hold a hand near any roof or wall vent you found. Moving air, or a faint hum of the fan itself, confirms that cap is connected to a working duct. No airflow at any exterior cap, despite the fan clearly running inside, means the air is going somewhere else, most often the attic.
  3. If you can safely access the attic hatch, look at the duct with a flashlight. Follow the flexible or rigid duct from the fan housing. A duct that runs a few feet and simply opens into open attic space, sometimes with visible staining or matted insulation right at the opening, confirms the problem directly. A duct that continues all the way to a roof or wall cap is doing its job.
  4. Note any smell or staining near the bathroom's location in the attic. A musty or slightly sour smell concentrated in one area, or insulation that looks darker or compacted in a spot with no other obvious cause, is consistent with a fan that has been venting into the attic for some time.

04 / THE FIXESThe two real ways to correct it

Once a fan is confirmed to be venting short, the fix is always the same idea: extend the duct the rest of the way to the outside, through whichever path is shorter and cleaner for that particular attic. There are two common terminations, and the right one depends on the house.

Through-roof termination

A through-roof cap is usually the more direct route when the bathroom sits under a straightforward section of roof with a short, mostly vertical run from the fan housing to the roof deck. The duct is extended to a roof-mounted vent cap with a spring-loaded flap or louvers that keeps weather and pests out while still opening under fan pressure. This termination integrates with the surrounding shingles the same way any roof penetration does, and it is worth having whoever installs it flash it the same way a plumbing boot or skylight would be flashed, because a poorly sealed cap trades one moisture problem for another.

Gable-wall termination

A gable-wall cap routes the duct sideways through the attic to an exterior wall vent instead of up through the roof. This is often the better choice when the bathroom sits closer to a gable end than to open roof deck, when the roof has a complex framing layout that makes a clean vertical run difficult, or when a homeowner would simply rather avoid adding a new roof penetration. The duct run is usually longer than a through-roof route, and a longer run needs to be pitched slightly downward toward the termination and insulated along the way, so any condensation that forms inside the duct itself drains outward instead of pooling and dripping back toward the fan.

Either fix works when it is done correctly. What does not work, in any form, is a duct that ends in the attic, a duct that vents into a soffit that is not itself vented to the outside past a screen, or a duct that has been crushed or kinked along its run and is only moving a fraction of the air the fan is trying to push.

The fan running is not the same thing as the fan working. A fan can hum for fifteen years while the duct behind it has been dumping into the attic the entire time.

05 / THE CODE BEHIND ITWhy outdoor termination is a code requirement, not a preference

This is not a matter of taste among builders. Residential mechanical code, built on the model codes most jurisdictions adopt, requires that bathroom exhaust air terminate outside the building rather than in an attic, soffit, or other concealed space. The requirement appears in the mechanical provisions adopted with Michigan's residential code (IRC M1501.1, outdoor discharge).. The requirement exists precisely because of the moisture mechanism described above, an attic was never designed to be a humidity sink, and code treats a fan that vents into one the same way it treats a fan that was never connected to a duct at all.

In practice this means a fan venting into the attic is not a cosmetic shortcut someone can leave alone indefinitely.
