Air is supposed to enter low at the eave, travel up under the roof deck, and exit high at the ridge or through roof-mounted vents, carrying summer heat and winter moisture out with it. Older homes often have wood soffit panels with small perforated vent strips or individual round vents set into the boards. Every time the eaves get repainted, and eaves on a two-story house get repainted less often and less carefully than the siding at eye level, a coat of paint has a way of skinning over the tiny perforations. One coat barely matters. Several coats over several decades can seal a vent strip almost completely while it still looks like a vent from the ground. This is the blockage most likely to be invisible without a close look, because the vent is still physically present, just glued shut.

This is the most common blockage we find in attics, and it usually was not caused by neglect, it was caused by an insulation upgrade done without the one extra part that keeps the eave clear. Blown-in cellulose or fiberglass is added from the attic side to boost R-value, and if nobody installed rigid baffles (also called vent chutes) between the rafters before blowing the insulation in, the loose fill migrates outward and buries the soffit opening from above. The house gets a genuinely better insulated attic and a genuinely dead ventilation system in the same afternoon, and the two effects can partially cancel each other out on the winter ice dam question, which is exactly the kind of tradeoff a homeowner deserves to know about before it happens.

The result is a house that looks freshly updated from the curb with an eave that has quietly gone from vented to sealed. A fourth cause worth a brief mention: soffit vents built into a gable end or porch overhang sometimes get taped or bagged over during a paint or pressure-washing job and never uncovered afterward. It is a smaller, more occasional cause than the three above, but it is the easiest one to fix once you spot it.

03 / VERIFY YOUR OWNA homeowner check from the ground and the attic hatch

You do not need a ladder on the roof to get a real answer here. Two short checks, one from the ground and one from the attic hatch, will tell you most of what a professional inspection confirms in more detail.

  1. From the ground, look up at the soffit in daylight. Walk the full perimeter of the house and look for the vent pattern: continuous perforated strip, individual round or rectangular vents, or a screen. Note any stretch of soffit where the pattern disappears, where the openings look painted flat, or where the material changes (a section of shiny new aluminum next to older wood is worth a closer look).
  2. Shine a flashlight up through a vent opening from below. On a bright day you may be able to see daylight or attic framing through an open vent. A vent that looks solid gray or shows no light behind it at all is a strong sign of a paint seal or a blockage right at the opening.
  3. Go up to the attic hatch and look down at the eaves, ideally with a work light. This is the single most useful check, because it shows you the intake side directly. Look along the low edge of the attic, where the roof deck meets the top of the exterior wall, for a visible gap of open space above the insulation. If you see insulation piled all the way up against the roof deck with no open channel, that stretch of eave is blocked from the inside regardless of what the soffit vent looks like from the yard.
  4. Look for baffles. If you can see rigid cardboard, foam, or plastic channels running from the eave up over the top of the insulation, that section has proper baffles and is very likely still drawing air. Their absence does not guarantee a blockage on its own, but it is the condition that makes one likely the next time insulation is added or settles.

The insulation-and-baffle case is worth a specific warning, because it is the one homeowners are most likely to make worse with good intentions.
