Hail Test Squares: How Pros Count Hits on a Roof

Two inspectors can walk the same roof after the same storm and come back with two different opinions, unless they are both counting the same way. The test square is how a hail inspection stops being a guess and starts being a measurement.

Ask a homeowner how much hail damage their roof has and you will usually get an impression, not a number: a little, a lot, hard to say. That is a reasonable answer from the ground, but it is not something an insurer, a manufacturer, or a second opinion can work with. The tool the roofing industry uses to turn an impression into a number is the test square, a small, consistently sized sample area marked on the roof and inspected hit by hit. It sounds almost too simple to matter, and that is exactly the point. The value is in doing the same small thing the same way every time, on every slope, so the count means something.

It is the same logic a quality inspector uses on a factory floor: you cannot check every unit, so you check a defined sample carefully and let that sample speak for the batch.

02 / THE METHODHow a test square actually gets marked

In practice, an inspector lays out the square with chalk lines, tape, or a marked frame, choosing a section of the slope that is otherwise representative rather than the single worst-looking patch. Picking the ugliest few feet on purpose would inflate the count and misrepresent the rest of the roof, and picking a suspiciously clean patch on purpose would understate it. A fair square is chosen for being ordinary, not for making a point either direction.

Working the square methodically

Inside the marked area, the inspector checks every shingle course by course, looking for the same signs described in our hail bruise guide: a shallow dimple, granules displaced at the impact point, and confirmed with a light touch test where the surface gives at the exact spot. Each qualifying mark gets counted, sometimes flagged with a small chalk dot or grease pencil mark so the same hit is not counted twice and so a second reviewer, an adjuster, or a manufacturer's field rep can walk the same square later and see exactly what was found. The pace is deliberately slow, closer to a careful inventory than a quick scan, because the whole point is catching every qualifying mark inside the boundary rather than the handful that happen to stand out at a glance.

Keeping the standard consistent across the roof

The size and the criteria stay fixed from square to square. If one slope were checked in a 10 by 10 foot area and another in a 6 by 6 foot area, the two counts would not be comparable, and the whole point of the method would be lost. Consistency is what allows a homeowner, a second contractor, or an insurance adjuster to look at the same numbers later and trust that they mean the same thing on every slope of the house.

Not every mark inside a test square counts. The whole method falls apart if a scuffed granule or an old foot-traffic mark gets tallied the same as a genuine impact, so a real count depends on holding a consistent line about what qualifies.

The touch test does the real work here, the same way it does when evaluating a single suspected bruise. A mark that looks like a hit but feels firm underneath is a scuff, not a hit. A mark that gives slightly under light pressure, tied to a fractured mat, is counted. Overcounting inflates a claim with marks that were never storm-caused, which does not hold up under a second look and does not serve anyone honestly. 04 / THE COVERAGEWhy one square on one slope is not enough

Hail does not hit a roof evenly. A slope facing the direction a storm blew in from typically takes the heaviest concentration of hits, while a sheltered slope on the opposite side of the same roof, or a section shielded by a dormer or a taller part of the house, can come through with very little to show. A single test square on the wrong slope can tell a misleading story either way: a clean square on the sheltered side says nothing about the exposed side, and a heavy count on the worst slope does not automatically mean the whole roof matches it.

That is the practical reason a thorough inspection marks a square on each distinct slope rather than relying on one sample for the whole roof. It is more work than a single quick check, but it is the difference between a defensible, roof-wide picture and a number that only describes one corner of the house. A single square proves what happened in that square. A roof-wide picture takes a square on every slope, worked the same way, and read the same way. That is the difference between an opinion and a documented finding.

Roof complexity adds to this. A simple gable roof might only need two or three squares to represent it fairly. A cut-up roof with hips, valleys, and multiple distinct slopes at different pitches and exposures may need several more before the picture is complete. There is no shortcut that skips this step and still produces a number worth trusting.

If you are watching from the ground while an inspector works your roof, the process looks unglamorous: someone moving slowly across a marked section, pausing often, occasionally pressing a finger to a spot and checking it against the surrounding shingles. That slowness is the method, not a delay. A fast walk-by that calls a verdict on an entire roof in a few minutes is not doing what a test square is built to do.

Expect photographs of each square, notes on what was and was not counted, and a plain explanation afterward of what the counts mean for your roof, whether that is monitoring, a targeted repair, or a conversation worth having with your insurer.
