03 / THE METHODThe wide, mid, close sequence, elevation by elevation
Walk the outside of the house and treat each roof elevation, meaning each side as seen from the ground, as its own mini-shoot. A typical single family home has four elevations; a more complex roof with dormers or additions may have more distinct planes worth covering separately.
The wide shot
Stand back far enough to fit the entire roof plane for that elevation in one frame, including the roofline against the sky, the gutter line, and enough of the house below it to establish context. This shot exists to show overall condition and to orient anyone looking at the photos later. Take it straight-on rather than at a sharp angle when you can, since an angled wide shot distorts proportions and makes later comparison harder.
The mid shot
Move closer, or zoom, until you are framing a section of roof, such as one slope between a ridge and an eave, or the area around a chimney or vent. This is the bridge shot between the wide context and the close detail, and it is the one people skip most often. Without it, a close-up of a single shingle floats with no way to tell where on the roof it sits.
The close shot
Fill the frame with the specific damage: a creased or lifted shingle, a dented vent cap, a cracked pipe boot, a bent gutter section. This is where the low-angle light and the scale object in the next part of this guide matter most, since a close shot in flat light with nothing for scale is the single most common reason a documentation photo gets questioned later.
Repeat the wide, mid, close sequence on every elevation, not just the one that looks obviously affected. 04 / THE DETAILLight, scale, and the shots people forget
Two small habits make the difference between close photos that prove something and close photos that prove nothing: the angle of the light, and whether there is anything in the frame to judge size against.
Shoot in low, raking light
Early morning or late afternoon sun crosses the roof at a low angle and throws long shadows across any dent, crease, or lifted edge, which is exactly the shadow detail that reveals subtle damage. The same spot photographed at high noon, with the sun almost directly overhead, can look nearly flat and unremarkable. If a storm hits midday and you want to document immediately, take your first pass of photos right away for the record, then go back out in the next low-light window and reshoot the close details if the damage is subtle. Overcast, evenly lit days work reasonably well too; the shot to avoid is direct, high overhead sun.
Put something in the frame for scale
A coin, a house key, a tape measure, or your own hand held near the damage gives anyone looking at the photo later an immediate sense of size, without which "how big was it" becomes a guess. This matters most for anything related to hail, since hail size is one of the first questions an insurer or a roofer will ask, and a photo with no scale reference cannot answer it. Do not skip flashing, vents, and gutters
Shingles get most of the attention, but flashing, roof vents, and gutters are softer materials that often show damage more clearly than a shingle does, and they are frequently the actual source of a leak even when the shingles nearby look fine. Photograph vent caps, chimney flashing, valley metal, and gutter and downspout sections at the same wide, mid, close standard as the shingle field. 05 / THE CONTEXTDate, address, and tying photos to your house
A photo of a damaged shingle proves nothing about when or where it happened unless the surrounding evidence ties it to a place and a date. Two habits fix this. First, confirm your phone's date and time settings are correct before you start shooting, since the automatic timestamp embedded in the photo file is one of the most useful pieces of metadata you will collect and it is worthless if the clock is wrong. Second, include at least one photo per outing that shows your actual house, ideally with the house number visible or a distinctive, permanent landscape feature in frame, alongside the roof shots.
If your phone supports location tagging for photos, leaving it enabled for this purpose adds another layer of automatic, hard-to-dispute context. Whatever method you use, the goal is the same: someone looking at your photo folder six months from now, with no memory of that day, should be able to tell what house this is, roughly when it was taken, and where on the roof each shot was pointed.
A quick habit worth building: before you put the phone away, glance back through the sequence you just shot and confirm each elevation actually has its wide, mid, and close set, rather than discovering a gap later when you go looking for a specific angle. It only takes a minute standing in the yard, and it is far easier to walk back around the house for a missed shot while the light and the damage are both still there than to try to recreate the same conditions a week later.

06 / BEYOND THE ROOFInterior shots and the yard tell the rest of the story
Storm damage rarely stays confined to the roof, and photographing only the shingles leaves out evidence that often matters just as much. Two other places deserve the same wide, mid, close treatment.
Interior ceilings and the attic
Photograph any ceiling stain, bulge, or damp patch the same way: a wide shot of the room to show where it is, then a closer shot of the mark itself. If you can safely check the attic with a flashlight, photograph the underside of the deck near any suspected leak point, including any visible water trail along a rafter, since that trail often points back to the actual entry location rather than straight up from the stain. Collateral yard damage
Window screens, siding, the air conditioner, deck boards, and stripped or shredded plant leaves all take the same storm your roof did, and they are far easier to check and photograph than the roof itself. Torn screens, dented siding panels, and bruised AC fins are common, easily photographed indicators that hail or high wind hit the property, and they are worth documenting even if you never end up needing them. 07 / THE ARCHIVEBacking everything up off your phone
Photos that only exist on a phone are one lost or cracked screen away from disappearing, and a phone can also fill up and start deleting older photos to make room without much warning. Back up your storm photo set the same day if you can, to a cloud photo service, an email to yourself, or a separate folder on a computer. Keep the original files rather than only screenshots of them where possible, since screenshots can strip the timestamp and location metadata that make the originals useful.
A simple habit that helps later: create one folder or album per storm event, named with the date, and drop every photo from that day into it, roof, interior, and yard together. No. A modern smartphone camera is enough for documentation purposes. Technique matters far more than equipment: a wide, mid, and close sequence per elevation, shot in low-angle light with something for scale, produces far more usable evidence than an expensive camera used carelessly.
