A roofing company writing about ladder safety has an obvious conflict of interest, so let us deal with it in the first paragraph. We would rather you were not on a ladder at all. Almost everything homeowners climb for can be done from the ground with binoculars, from inside through the attic hatch, or by us for nothing. That is not a sales line; it is the actual recommendation, and the rest of this page assumes you are going up anyway and want to do it correctly.
01 /What this series is for
This is the opening page of a set of guides about what a homeowner can genuinely do without a contractor. Some of those pages will end with a recommendation to call somebody. Several of them will end with the opposite: a clear statement that the thing you are worried about does not need anyone, including us.
That is deliberate. A roofing website that treats every homeowner observation as a reason to book an inspection is not being useful, it is fishing. The counter-position is more valuable to both sides: if you know which problems are real, the calls you do make are the ones worth making.
OSHA's fall protection requirements govern employers and their crews at work. They do not apply to you in your own yard. That is a legal distinction, not a physical one: the height, the gravity, and the concrete are identical. The practical implication runs the opposite way from how people usually read it, because our crews work inside a system of required equipment, training, and supervision, and you do not have one.
02 /The rules that actually prevent falls
There are dozens of ladder rules published. These are the ones that account for most of what actually goes wrong.
The four to one angle
The base of an extension ladder goes out one foot for every four feet of working height. Too steep and the ladder can tip backward when you shift your weight near the top. Too shallow and the feet slide out, which is the failure that happens fastest and gives you the least chance to react.
The check that requires no measuring: stand upright with your toes touching the ladder feet and put your arms straight out in front of you. Your palms should land comfortably on a rung at about shoulder height. If you have to lean forward to reach, the base is too far out. If your hands hit above the rung you were reaching for, it is too close.
Three feet above the landing
If you are stepping off at the top, the ladder needs to extend about three feet above that point, both to give you something to hold while you transition and to keep the top from being the highest thing you are relying on. If you are not stepping off, extending it anyway gives you a handhold at the top rather than leaving you gripping the rails at chest height.
Three points of contact, and nothing in your hands
Two feet and one hand, or two hands and one foot, at all times on the way up and down. That means nothing is carried in your hands. Use a tool belt, a bucket hook, or a rope, or make two trips. The moment on a ladder when most people are least stable is the moment they are trying to get a bucket over the top rung.
Keep your belt buckle inside the rails
Overreaching sideways is the classic way a correctly-set ladder still ends up on the ground. The rule is simple and worth being rigid about: if your belt buckle passes outside either rail, get down and move the ladder. Moving a ladder four times is tedious. It is also the entire fix for this failure mode.
Know the duty rating
Ladders carry a duty rating covering the user plus everything they are carrying. The lightest homeowner-grade ladders are rated well below what an adult plus a full bucket of wet leaves actually weighs. Read the label on the side rail and count honestly.
Fiberglass near anything electrical
The overhead service drop where power enters the house, and the mast it lands on, are not places to find out what your ladder is made of. Aluminum ladders and electricity are an established and serious hazard. If the work is anywhere near the drop, the answer is a fiberglass ladder, or better, not doing the work.
03 /Setting it up, the part everyone rushes
- Firm, level, dry footing. Not soft lawn the day after rain, not a slab of scrap wood on a slope, not bricks stacked under one foot. Ladder levelers exist because uneven ground is the normal condition around a house.
- Never rest the top on a gutter. A K-style aluminum gutter is a drainage component, not a structural one. It crushes under a ladder, and once it deforms the ladder top slides sideways. Use a standoff or stabilizer that bears on the fascia or across the roof surface instead.
- Check that both rung locks are fully seated. Look at them. Partial engagement on one side is a known and very bad failure.
- Have someone foot the ladder, or tie the top off. A second person standing on the bottom rung is the single cheapest safety improvement available.
- Check the weather before you commit. Wind against a person at height is a real force, and if the trees are moving it is enough. Frost, wet rungs, and ice are absolute stops rather than judgment calls.
- Wear shoes with a defined heel and a clean sole. Wet grass on a smooth sole is how people slip off a rung they were standing on correctly.
04 /The hard stop lines
Everything above is technique. This list is not. These are the situations where the correct answer is to stop, and we are not going to hedge any of them.
- Never step off onto the roof. Being on a roof is a different category of risk from being on a ladder, and it is where the serious injuries come from. We cover why in is it safe to walk on your roof.
- Never in wind, rain, frost, or ice. Not a shortened trip, not just for a second, not to look at one thing.
- Never alone. At minimum someone in the house knows you are out there. Preferably someone is holding the ladder.
- Never near the electrical service drop or any overhead conductor, with any ladder, of any material.
- Never to remove snow or ice. Roof rakes are designed to work from the ground for exactly this reason, and chipping at an ice dam from a ladder is one of the worst combinations of unstable footing, overhead load, and overreach there is. See safe ice dam removal.
- Never with a job at the top that needs both hands. If the task requires two hands and balance, it requires scaffolding or a professional, not confidence.
- Never above single-story height if you are not experienced and spotted. Second-story gutter work on a Michigan colonial is not a beginner job.
Ladder falls are a leading cause of serious home maintenance injury, and the Consumer Product Safety Commission publishes the data on it. The relevant detail is not the total count; it is that the majority of these happen at modest heights during routine chores, to people who had done the same thing many times before. Familiarity is the risk factor, not height.
05 /What to do instead, most of the time
Almost every reason a homeowner climbs a ladder around a roof has a ground-level or interior alternative that produces the same information.

06 /When to call us, and when not to bother
The lane rule for this series is that every page names both. Here is the ladder version.
Not worth a call
- Leaves in a gutter that you can clear with a downspout flush from ground level.
- A downspout extension or strap that popped loose. That is a five minute fix with a screwdriver and no height.
- Dark algae streaking on a north slope. It is cosmetic, and the removal question is its own thing.
- A gutter that overflowed once during a genuine downpour and has behaved every time since.
- Wanting to know how old the roof is. Your closing paperwork or a permit record answers that for free.
Worth a call
- Anything that would put you above single-story height, for any reason. That is the whole point of this page.
- Any evidence of an entry point: a stain, a musty smell upstairs, daylight in the attic, damp insulation.
- Any roof-adjacent work on a house where the service drop crosses the work area.
- After a wind or hail event, when what you can see from the ground suggests something and you want it confirmed.
- Any gutter or fascia work at height on a two-story house, which is genuinely not a homeowner job.
The inspection is $0 and comes with photographs, which is the honest reason we can afford to tell you to skip half the list above. We would rather look at your roof once for free and tell you it is fine than have you fall off a ladder confirming the same thing.

Our practical line is single-story eave height, and only with someone footing the ladder and no tools needed at the top. Above that, the consequences of a fall rise sharply and the setup gets harder to do correctly on the uneven ground around a typical house. Binoculars from the ground, working one slope at a time from several positions, plus a daylight look in the attic with a flashlight. The attic is the half most people skip and it is where leaks actually reveal themselves, because it shows the path water travelled rather than the surface it might have entered. Between those two you can answer most homeowner questions without leaving the ground or the house.
Yes, and that is the point of a free inspection. It is $0 with no obligation, it produces photographs you keep, and it ends in a plain answer: the roof is fine, it needs a repair, or it needs replacing and here is the evidence. We would much rather deliver a nothing-needed verdict than have someone climb up to reach the same conclusion.
