A skylight earns its keep on a gray Michigan afternoon, but in January it is also the single largest hole in your roof's insulation, and it behaves differently under snow than the shingles around it. A skylight is a curb and a glazed unit set into a hole cut through the roof deck, the insulation, and the ceiling below it, all in one assembly. Every other square foot of your attic floor separates heated living space from the cold roof deck above it. The skylight shaft skips that separation for the width of the opening, so heat from the room below has a much shorter, much less insulated path to the underside of the glass and the curb framing around it. The result is a patch of roof that runs measurably warmer than the shingles around it in cold weather, and warmer roof surfaces melt snow faster than colder ones sitting a few feet away.

Compare the two assemblies side by side. A well-built section of attic floor might carry a foot or more of insulation between the living space and the cold roof deck above it. A skylight shaft is framed with dimensional lumber and glazing, and even a good unit conducts heat at a far higher rate per square foot than that insulated attic floor does. Manufacturers publish this as a U-factor rather than an R-value, but the practical effect is the same: more heat moves through the skylight assembly per hour than through an equal patch of insulated ceiling, and the curb and frame around the glass are usually the weakest point in that assembly, because they are harder to insulate than the glazing itself.

Stand back from the house on a clear, cold day after a snowfall and you can often see the effect directly. Snow sits undisturbed across most of the roof, but a halo of bare shingle or thin, wet-looking snow surrounds the skylight, wider on the downslope side where meltwater has been running. That melt halo is not proof of a defect. It is simply the visible signature of a warmer patch of roof, the same physics that drives a whole-roof ice dam, playing out on a much smaller scale around one opening.

Meltwater generated at the glass and curb does not just disappear. It runs down the glazing and onto the roofing below the skylight, following the slope like any other water on the roof. Where that water crosses back onto shingles running at normal, cold roof-deck temperature, usually a foot or two below the curb, it can refreeze the same way meltwater refreezes at a cold eave. On some homes that shows up as a fringe of ice hugging the bottom of the skylight curb every cold snap, whether or not the rest of the roof is dammed at all.

03 / CONDENSATION OR A LEAKTelling condensation from an actual leak

The symptom homeowners worry about most is moisture at the inside of the skylight, and the two most common causes look similar from a few feet away but call for very different responses. Condensation forms when humid indoor air reaches the cold interior surface of the glass or frame and the air can no longer hold onto its moisture at that lower temperature, the same way a cold glass of water beads on the outside on a summer day. A flashing or seal leak is water finding a physical gap and traveling from the outside of the roof to the inside.

A few patterns tend to separate the two. Condensation shows up most in the coldest stretches of winter, tends to appear overnight or first thing in the morning, tracks down the inside of the frame or pools on the sill rather than staining the drywall of the shaft around it, and gets worse after activities that add humidity indoors: showers, cooking, laundry, or a humidifier left running. A real leak is more likely to show up during or right after rain, a fast thaw, or wind-driven snow, tends to appear at a specific spot along the frame perimeter or a corner rather than evenly around the glass, and often leaves a stain on the drywall or trim of the shaft itself, not just moisture on the glass.

Chronic dripping every January, on the coldest mornings, with no correlation to rain or snowmelt outside, is the classic condensation pattern, and the fix usually starts inside the house rather than on the roof. That said, an aging skylight unit, worn seals, or flashing that has moved over the years can cause a genuine leak that happens to show up in cold weather too, which is exactly why a look from both sides, inside the shaft and outside on the curb, is the only way to know for certain which one you have. 04 / THE DOWNSLOPE ICEWhy the ice ridge below a skylight forms first

Ask a roofer which few spots on a roof ice up first in a bad winter and a skylight curb makes almost every list, often before the eaves themselves. The mechanism is the same localized-heat story from the section above, but it compounds with geometry. The curb interrupts the smooth plane of the roof deck, meltwater from the glass concentrates into a narrower path than it would spread across an open field of shingles, and on many installations the framing around the shaft is harder to ventilate from below than the open attic is, so warmth lingers there longer.

Where a skylight sits inside a valley or close to a dormer wall, the effect stacks further, because both features already concentrate meltwater and complicate airflow on their own. None of this means the skylight is failing. It means the roof around it is doing exactly what physics predicts for a warm patch draining onto a cold one. Left alone, a chronic ice ridge at a curb can eventually work water under the shingles just below it the same way a full-width eave dam does, which is why a skylight that ices every year is worth a look even if nothing has visibly leaked yet.

DO NOT CHIP AT IT

Ice built up around a skylight curb should never be chipped, picked, or pried with a shovel or ice pick. Skylight glazing and the flashing around it are far easier to crack or tear than ordinary shingles, and a cracked pane or torn flashing turns a cosmetic ice ridge into an actual leak. Roof raking well clear of the skylight itself is the safer stopgap; anything closer than that is a job for a professional.

05 / PREVENTIONWhat actually reduces skylight icing and condensation

Because both problems trace back to heat and moisture escaping into a cold assembly, the fixes look a lot like the ones that stop a whole-roof ice dam, just applied to a smaller shaft. Reducing indoor humidity in winter helps first: venting bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans straight outside rather than into the attic or the skylight shaft, running them longer after showers and cooking, and keeping indoor humidity appropriate for outdoor winter temperatures all cut down on the moisture available to condense on cold glass. Insulated cellular shades or blinds closed at night add a meaningful buffer between room air and the coldest part of the glass, which reduces both heat loss and the condensation that follows it, at very little cost. On the roofing side, the curb itself can often be insulated better than it was originally built, and a reroof is the natural time to do that work, along with confirming the flashing and any ice barrier membrane around the opening meets current code. A shaft framed as its own sealed box, with no path for the soffit-to-ridge airflow that keeps the rest of the deck cold, effectively creates a mini attic with none of the mixing that keeps temperatures even.
