3. Delaminated plies

A delaminated sheet loses most of its stiffness even though the wood itself may not look rotted, which is why this cause sometimes surprises a homeowner who was expecting to see obvious decay when the shingles come off.
4. Plank gaps flexing

Every damaged board or sheet is cut out and replaced, sheet by sheet or board by board, with new material matched in thickness to the surrounding deck. New underlayment and, where the area sits near an eave or valley, ice and water barrier go back down over the repaired section, followed by new shingles tied into the surrounding field so the patch sheds water the same way the rest of the roof does.
If the original cause was a leak, addressing that source, a failed boot, a flashing detail, worn valley metal, is part of the same repair visit, since replacing decking without fixing what wetted it in the first place just restarts the clock.
