02 /What this number is, and what it is not
It is a code-minimum arithmetic check on one input. It tells you the opening area an attic of that size is supposed to have, and roughly what it takes to supply it with common products. That is genuinely useful, and it is the part a homeowner can do from a kitchen table.
It is not a measurement of your roof, because four things decide whether an attic is actually ventilated and none of them are visible to a calculator: whether the soffit openings are clear or packed with insulation, whether the products up there carry the ratings they appear to, whether the intake and exhaust are balanced rather than merely sufficient in total, and whether a gable vent is quietly short-circuiting the ridge. Those are inspection questions, and the symptoms that send us looking are in signs of poor roof ventilation.
Vent counts and linear feet round up, because a partial vent does not exist and the point of the number is to meet a minimum rather than to approach one. That means a count here can land one unit above a rounded figure quoted in the guides. Erring high on intake is the safe direction to be wrong.
03 /Where each part of this comes from
The ratio is code. Michigan's residential code sets a minimum net free ventilating area of 1/150 of the vented space, reduced to 1/300 where listed conditions are met, and those conditions involve a vapor retarder and where the exhaust openings sit. Most Macomb County homes are sized to 1/150, which is the simpler standard to verify. The product ratings are the typical figures published in how many roof vents your house needs, which also works both examples in full. They are approximations by nature: a premium ridge vent with an external baffle and a bargain shingle-over strip can carry meaningfully different ratings per linear foot even though both look identical from the ground. For a real specification, the number that counts is the one in the chosen product's own documentation.
The even split is the standard target rather than a code formula, and the reason it matters as much as the total is the subject of balanced attic ventilation. An attic can hit its required area on paper and still perform badly if nearly all of that area is exhaust with very little intake feeding it.
04 /Why this is worth ten minutes
Ventilation is the cheapest thing on a roof and one of the largest levers on how long that roof lasts. An attic running hot in August ages shingles from underneath, and an attic carrying winter moisture with nowhere to send it produces frost on the sheathing and the meltwater that follows. It is also the item most likely to be quietly missing from a reroof proposal. If the number this page gives you is meaningfully above what is on your roof today, that is a specific question worth asking every bidder: how much net free area does your scope add, and how did you get there. A contractor who can answer that with arithmetic is telling you something about the whole job. Ours comes with the rest of the measurement.
The follow-up questions
For most houses it is close to the footprint of the space directly beneath the attic, so the finished floor area of a single story ranch is usually a good starting figure. On a two story home it is the upper floor footprint rather than the total square footage of the house, which is the most common mistake people make with this math. Attached garages and additions with their own attic spaces get measured separately, since they are separate vented spaces with their own requirement.
Not by itself. The total is one of three things that have to be true, and the other two are that the area is split reasonably between intake down at the eaves and exhaust up near the ridge, and that every one of those openings is physically clear. Insulation pushed over the soffit, painted-over louvers, and a gable vent competing with a ridge vent are all common enough that we look for them on every inspection. A roof can satisfy the arithmetic and still hold moisture.
Use 1/150 unless you have confirmed your house qualifies for the exception, which is how most homes in this county are sized. The reduced ratio is allowed only where the listed conditions are met, and those conditions involve a vapor retarder and where the exhaust openings sit. It is worth knowing that some quotes lean on the smaller number to justify less vent product without confirming the house qualifies at all, so if a proposal uses it, ask which condition it is relying on.
