Soffit is the panel that closes the underside of your roof overhang, the horizontal ceiling you see when you stand under an eave and look up. It has two jobs at once, and the two jobs pull in opposite directions. It has to seal that gap against weather, insects, and nesting animals, and on most houses it also has to let outdoor air pass through, because it is the intake side of the attic's ventilation system. Vented soffit is built to do both. Solid soffit is built to do only the first one. Installing the wrong type in the wrong place is one of the more common, and more overlooked, mistakes in Macomb County exterior work.

02 / THE MECHANISMWhy soffit has to breathe over an attic
A ridge vent, box vents, or a gable fan all rely on outdoor air entering low and exiting high, which is exactly what keeps the underside of the roof deck cold and dry through a Michigan winter and reasonably ventilated in summer heat. Soffit is almost always where that low entry point lives. They just have to find the air somewhere else, and the somewhere else is usually the house itself, through recessed lighting, the attic hatch, and other gaps in the ceiling plane. It is also worth saying plainly that a perforated soffit panel only helps if the air behind it can actually reach the roof deck. A vented soffit installed over an eave packed solid with insulation, with no baffle holding the channel open, is functionally almost as blocked as solid panel would have been. The panel choice and the channel behind it are two separate parts of the same system, and both have to work for the intake to count.
03 / THE EXCEPTIONSWhere solid soffit is the right call
Not every overhang sits above an attic, and forcing vented panel onto those sections adds cost and maintenance for no ventilation benefit. Three situations come up most often on Macomb County homes.

Where that is confirmed, not assumed, solid soffit is appropriate. The catch is that confirming it takes a look from the attic side, not a guess from the ground, which is exactly why mixed rooflines are where this decision goes wrong most often.

Fully perforated panels deliver the most net free area per foot of soffit, which matters on houses where the eave is the only intake path available and has to support the entire attic. Center-vent strip panels trade some of that area for a cleaner sightline from below, useful where a homeowner wants less visible perforation but the eave still needs to breathe. Neither aluminum nor vinyl is inherently better for airflow; the material choice is mostly about cost, color retention, and how the rest of the exterior trim is finished, while the vented-versus-solid choice is about what sits behind the panel.
05 / THE MISTAKEThe classic re-siding mistake: covering your only intake
The single most common way a house ends up with a ventilation problem it did not have before is a siding or soffit job that swaps out old, weathered vented panel for new solid panel, because it looked cleaner in the sample book, matched a trim color better, or the crew simply grabbed what was on the truck. A homeowner can get a useful first read from the ground and the attic hatch without any special tools. Outside, look up at each run of soffit around the house and note whether the perforations are visible or the panel face is smooth. Whatever you find, do it section by section rather than assuming the whole perimeter matches, since additions and porch sections often differ from the main eave.
Inside, from the attic hatch with a flashlight, look toward the eaves on a bright day. Vented soffit with a clear channel behind it shows pinpoints of daylight along the eave. If the eave looks solid black even where the exterior panel is perforated, insulation or debris is likely blocking the channel from the inside, which behaves like solid soffit even though the panel itself is vented. Either finding, solid panel over an attic or a blocked channel behind vented panel, is worth a closer look before it becomes a bigger problem.
None of this replaces a proper inspection with the net free area actually measured, since perforation patterns and panel widths vary enough between manufacturers that eyeballing it only gets a homeowner part of the way.
