Homeowners walking their yard after a windstorm usually look for one thing: shingles missing or torn loose somewhere obvious. That is a real form of damage, but it is not the only one, and it may not even be the more common one. A shingle can survive a wind event with every tab still nailed in place, no gap in the field, nothing lying in the gutter, and still be structurally broken. The break shows up as a crease, a line where the mat has folded and fractured, and it is the kind of damage that looks like nothing from the ground and looks very real from a ladder in the right light.
01 /The short answer: two different failures, one cause
Both a crease and a tear start with the same event: wind getting under the free edge of a shingle tab and lifting it. What happens next depends on how hard the gust is, how brittle the shingle has become with age and temperature, and how strong the seal strip underneath still is. A weaker gust folds the tab back and lets it drop, leaving a crease line across the mat. A stronger gust, or a shingle whose sealant has already given up, tears the tab partly or fully free. 02 /How wind creases a shingle
An asphalt shingle is a fiberglass mat coated in asphalt and surfaced with granules, and it is designed to lie flat against the shingle course below it, held down along its lower edge by a factory sealant strip. Wind flutter starts when a gust gets under the free edge of the tab, at a seam, a corner, or anywhere the seal has not fully bonded. Once air is under the tab, the tab lifts. If the gust is not strong enough to tear the tab loose from its nails, the shingle folds backward along a line roughly parallel to the butt edge, and the mat fractures at the fold. When the wind drops, the tab falls back down, sometimes even re-sealing partially to the course below through residual heat and pressure. The shingle looks like it was never touched, but the fiberglass mat underneath is broken along that crease line, and a broken mat cannot flex the way an intact one does.
Why the fold happens along a line, not randomly
Shingle mats resist bending in every direction until the stress at one point exceeds what the fibers can absorb. Under repeated wind flutter, that failure point concentrates at the same place each time, roughly where the tab transitions from its nailed, laminated body to the exposed free edge. That is why creases tend to run in fairly straight, consistent lines across a tab rather than showing up as random wrinkles. The line is the mat telling you exactly where it gave way.
03 /How wind tears or removes a shingle
A tear is what happens when the same lifting force keeps building past the point where the mat can fold and recover. Instead of a crease, the fibers separate, the sealant bond fails completely, or the nails pull through the shingle at the fastener line. The result is a tab that is partly torn away, hanging by one edge, or gone entirely, exposing the felt or synthetic underlayment beneath. Older, more brittle shingles tear more easily than newer ones, because heat cycling and UV exposure over years make the asphalt coating stiffer and the mat less able to flex before it fails. 04 /Spotting a crease in the right light
The reason creased shingles get missed is straightforward: at midday, with the sun high and even, a crease line can be nearly invisible. The granules on both sides of the fold reflect light the same way, and from ground level or even from a ladder, the roof can look uniform. The fold becomes visible when light rakes across the surface at a low angle, which is why roof inspectors deliberately schedule storm-damage walks for early morning or late afternoon whenever the schedule allows it.
What a crease shadow looks like
In low-angle light, a crease casts a thin shadow line across the tab, similar to the shadow a fold in a piece of paper casts under a desk lamp. The line usually runs across the width of the tab rather than along its length, and it often repeats across several adjacent tabs in a cluster, since a wind gust rarely folds just one shingle in isolation. A single straight shadow line is worth a closer look. A field of them across one slope, especially the slope that faced the prevailing wind during the storm, is a strong signal of a widespread wind event rather than one weak spot.

05 /Why a creased shingle is still a broken shingle
It is tempting to treat a shingle that never moved, never went missing, and still looks intact as undamaged. That is the wrong read on the physics. Once the fiberglass mat has fractured along a crease line, the shingle has lost the structural integrity that lets it shed water and resist the next gust the way it was engineered to. A creased shingle is more likely to tear the rest of the way on a future wind event, because the mat is already weakened exactly where the next fold would occur. It can also lose its watertight seal at the crease line over freeze-thaw cycles, letting moisture work into the mat from that point forward even if no visible leak shows up right away.
A shingle does not have to be missing to be damaged. If the mat has folded and fractured, the shingle has already failed the one job it has, and the roof is just waiting for the next gust to show it.
