Ice dams have been forming on Michigan roofs for as long as there have been Michigan roofs, which is plenty of time for the folklore to build up right alongside the ice. Some of it is a reasonable simplification. Some of it is flatly backwards, and it sends homeowners chasing the wrong fix every winter while the actual cause sits untouched in the attic. This guide takes five of the most common myths one at a time, explains what is actually happening in each case, and points to the deeper guide where the real fix lives.
01 / THE SHORT ANSWERWhy the myths persist
Almost every ice dam myth survives because it describes something true about where the ice shows up, while getting the cause backwards. Ice collects at the gutter, so people blame the gutter. A neighbor with more insulation seems to have fewer dams, so people assume insulation alone is the fix. Heat cables melt a channel through the ice, so people assume the cables solved the problem. Each of those observations is real. None of them is the actual mechanism, which is heat escaping a warm house into a cold attic, warming the roof deck, and melting the underside of the snowpack until the water refreezes at the unheated eave. 02 / MYTH ONE"My gutters caused the ice dam"
Gutters do not generate ice dams, and replacing perfectly good gutters will not stop one from forming. What actually happens is that gutters sit at the exact spot where a dam is most visible, so they take the blame for hosting evidence of a problem that started higher up the roof. A gutter can absolutely be damaged by an ice dam, pulled loose or bowed by the sheer weight of trapped ice and standing water, and a gutter with debris or a bad slope can make standing water linger longer once a dam has already formed. But the ice itself was built by meltwater refreezing at the cold eave above the gutter, not by the gutter.
What gutters actually do to the picture
A clogged or poorly pitched gutter can hold water against the fascia and soffit longer after a thaw, which is a real problem worth fixing on its own, and a gutter torn loose by ice weight is a legitimate repair. Neither of those is the same claim as "gutters cause ice dams," and a contractor who leads with a gutter replacement pitch for a dam problem is selling the wrong fix first.
The confusion is understandable, because a gutter full of ice is often the first thing a homeowner notices from the driveway, long before anyone thinks to check the attic. Ice sitting in a gutter also tends to be the most photogenic part of the problem, which is why it shows up in so many neighborhood conversations about "our gutters are the issue." The actual sequence runs the other direction: meltwater comes down from higher on the roof, refreezes at the cold eave above the gutter line, and only then spills into or over the gutter itself. Fix the gutter and the ice still forms in the exact same spot next storm, because nothing about the attic changed.
03 / MYTH TWO"More insulation always fixes it"
Insulation slows heat moving up through the attic floor by conduction, and it is a genuinely important part of the fix. It is not the whole fix, and piling it on without addressing air leaks first can make a dam worse rather than better. Warm air moving through gaps around recessed lights, the attic hatch, and duct penetrations carries far more heat into the attic than the same square footage of drywall ever will by conduction alone. Insulation does nothing to stop that moving air. It only slows the background heat loss once the air leaks are already sealed.
Blown-in insulation added without first checking soffit intake can bury or block the vents that keep the attic cold and dry, choking the ventilation the roof deck needs even as it slows heat transfer elsewhere. That combination has made dams worse on real Macomb County houses, not better.
The order matters: seal the air leaks first, bring insulation up to a modern depth second, and confirm intake and exhaust ventilation are still balanced third. Doing them out of sequence wastes the insulation dollars on a house that is still losing most of its heat through the gaps insulation was never designed to stop. It also helps to picture why conduction and moving air are such different problems for an attic floor. Conduction is heat creeping through solid material, like a hand slowly warming through a glove, and insulation is genuinely good at slowing that. Air leakage is heat riding along on a moving current, more like leaving a window cracked open, and a thicker glove does nothing to stop a draft coming through a gap next to it. That is why a homeowner can add insulation, see a modest improvement, and still get a dam the next hard freeze: the draft was never addressed.

04 / MYTHS THREE AND FOUR"Heat cables cure it" and "salt pucks are harmless"
Electric heat cable run in a zigzag along the eave genuinely melts a drainage channel through an existing dam, which lets trapped water escape instead of backing up under the shingles. That is real and useful. It is not a cure, because the cable does nothing about the attic heat loss that grew the dam in the first place. A home with cables installed and no attic work done will need the cables every winter, indefinitely, and will keep paying the electric bill for a fix that only ever manages the symptom. Calcium chloride melt socks and rock salt sit in a different category of myth, because the idea that they are a harmless quick fix is the part that is wrong. A sock laid across an active dam does melt a small channel, but it is short-lived, covers only the area it touches, and repeated exposure to the chlorides can accelerate corrosion of exposed metal flashing, fasteners, and gutters. Loose rock salt broadcast across shingles is worse: it can stain the roofing and does the same metal damage over a wider area for a similarly short-lived result.

05 / MYTH FIVE"Only old roofs get ice dams"
Roof age has almost nothing to do with whether a house grows an ice dam. The dam is driven by attic performance, not by how many years the shingles have been in service. A brand-new roof installed over an attic with unsealed bypasses, thin insulation, or blocked ventilation will dam exactly the same way the old roof did, because the shingles were never the variable that mattered. Complex roof geometry can also age dams in faster than a simple one regardless of how new anything is; valleys that concentrate meltwater from two roof planes and dormers with short, hard-to-ventilate eaves can ice up on houses built in the last few years just as readily as on a 1960s ranch.
A new roof does bring one genuine improvement: current Michigan code requires an ice and water barrier membrane at the eaves in ice-dam climate zones, which limits how much water gets past the shingles into the deck if a dam does form. That is real protection, and it is worth having. The reverse version of this myth is just as common: a homeowner assumes a very old roof is automatically doomed to dam every winter, and stops looking for a fix beyond raking and cables. Age can correlate with thinner original insulation and more accumulated bypasses from decades of remodels, but that is a correlation worth investigating, not a verdict. An older home with a properly air-sealed and insulated attic can perform as well in a freeze-thaw cycle as a new build, and the only way to know which situation applies to a specific house is to look at the attic itself rather than the birth year on the permit.
Ask what a fix is actually doing to the heat leak, not just to the ice. If the answer is nothing, it is a stopgap, not a solution, and that is fine as long as you know which one you bought.
