It looks cosmetic, a slight ridge where a fastener head is pushing up from underneath, and plenty of homeowners either walk right past it or grab a hammer, tap it flush, and move on. Neither response fixes anything. A raised nail head, what roofers call a nail pop, means a fastener has backed partway out of the deck, and the shingle sitting on top of it is now tented upward instead of lying flat against the roof. Four steps, in that order. Skip any one of them and the pop tends to come back, sometimes worse than before.

A nail does not spontaneously climb out of solid wood. Deck movement across the seasons
Roof sheathing is wood, and wood expands and contracts as its moisture content shifts with the seasons. Nail length and placement
Shingle manufacturers publish a minimum nail length and a required placement zone on every product, because a fastener that is too short, or one driven above the nailing line printed on the shingle, never gets full purchase in the deck. A short nail can look identical to a correct one on installation day and still be the reason it backs out three winters later. Placement matters just as much: a nail driven even slightly outside the manufacturer's nailing zone can miss the reinforced strip built into the shingle and rely on thinner material to hold it in place.
Missed rafters and overdriven guns
On roofs with plank decking or where the fastening pattern does not line up cleanly with the framing below, a nail can sail past a rafter or truss chord entirely and land in a gap between them, biting into thinner sheathing instead of solid framing. A pneumatic nail gun set with too much pressure creates a second version of the same problem: it drives the head so deep it cuts through the shingle mat around it, weakening the very material that is supposed to hold the fastener down. Either mistake can sit invisible for years before the nail finally works its way back up.
03 / THE DAMAGEWhat a raised head does to the shingle above it
Shingles are designed to lie flat, course over course, so wind moves across the surface instead of getting a lip to grab. A raised nail head breaks that plane. The shingle above it tents upward around the fastener, and that small ridge becomes two problems at once: a wind edge that a gust can catch and lift further, and a low point around the nail shaft itself where water can collect and work its way down the shank into the deck.
That last row matters because a nail pop rarely announces itself as a leak right away. The tented shingle sheds most rain just fine for a while, and the failure shows up slowly: a rust bleed streaking down from the head, granules wearing thin right at the tent line where the shingle is under the most stress, or eventually a small stain on the ceiling below that traces back to a single raised fastener a roofer finds during an attic-side check. Catching it at the bump stage, before any of that, is the cheap version of this repair.
04 / THE FIXThe wrong fix, and the right one
The instinct to grab a hammer and tap a popped nail flush is understandable. It is also the repair most likely to make the problem worse. Driving the same nail back through the same hole does not restore its grip in the deck, because the wood fiber the shank originally bit into has already been disturbed. Worse, the hammer blow can crack the shingle mat around the head, split the shingle itself in cold weather when asphalt is brittle, or drive the head slightly crooked so it tents the shingle from a new angle instead of the old one.
Pounding a popped nail flush treats the symptom you can see and ignores the one you cannot. The hole the nail backed out of is still there whether the head is proud or flush.
The repair that actually holds starts by pulling the nail rather than driving it. With the old fastener out, a roofer sets a new one nearby in sound decking, ideally catching the rafter or truss chord the original nail missed, and seals the vacated hole with roofing sealant so it cannot act as its own tiny channel into the deck. The shingle tab is then reset flat and hand-sealed if the factory adhesive strip will not reactivate on its own. Widespread nail pops across an otherwise young roof are also worth a second look at the original installation.
