Ask most homeowners to name the parts of their roof and they will say shingles, maybe flashing, maybe the gutters. Almost nobody names drip edge, and that is exactly why it gets left off cheap reroofs more often than any other component. It is a strip of formed metal a few inches wide, nailed along the edges of the deck, and its whole job is to make sure water leaves the roof where it is supposed to instead of finding a way behind the fascia and the wall below it.

01 / THE SHORT ANSWERA small metal strip with one important job
Drip edge is L-shaped or T-shaped metal flashing installed along the perimeter of the roof deck, at the eaves (the horizontal edges over the gutters) and the rakes (the sloped edges at the gable ends). Water that runs off the shingles hits the drip edge and is directed away from the fascia board and the wall assembly, out past the edge of the roof and into the gutter, instead of curling back underneath the edge by capillary action and soaking into the wood.
Every other flashing detail on a roof handles a specific penetration or intersection. Drip edge handles the entire perimeter, which is why a roof missing it is quietly wicking water into the fascia and rake boards on every wet day, not just during storms.
Without it, water clings to the underside of the last course of shingles and to the raw edge of the deck, a behavior called capillary action, and travels backward against gravity in a thin film until it reaches wood it can soak into. Over enough seasons that shows up as soft, discolored fascia, peeling paint at the roofline, and in the worst cases rot that reaches the rafter tails underneath.

Drip edge is now a standard line item on any quote we write, and building codes in most Michigan jurisdictions call for it on new shingle roofs. That was not always true, and it was not always enforced consistently on older reroofs. It causes a fascia board that looks a little tired in year five, and a soft spot a contractor finds when they finally get a ladder up there in year twelve. By then the fix is a carpentry repair alongside the roofing repair, not a two-dollar strip of metal.
03 / THE HARDWAREThe profile types you will actually see
Drip edge comes in a handful of standard profiles, and the names vary a little by manufacturer and region, but the shapes fall into a few families.

All three do the same basic job. The differences are mostly about how well the metal integrates with a gutter system and how it holds up to decades of freeze and thaw. On a standard asphalt reroof, a properly sized Type C or D profile in a color that matches the trim is the normal, correct choice, and it is a small enough cost that there is no good reason for a quote to leave it off or downgrade it to save money.
04 / THE SEQUENCEInstall order: eaves first, rakes over the underlayment
Drip edge is one of the few components on a roof where the install order actually reverses depending on which edge you are looking at, and it is a detail worth knowing if you are watching a crew work or comparing a written scope of work.
At the eaves
Along the horizontal eave edges, drip edge is typically installed directly on the bare deck first, before the ice barrier membrane and underlayment go down. That order lets the membrane lap over the top of the metal, so any water that gets under the shingles at the eave sheds onto the drip edge and off the roof, rather than finding a seam at the top of the metal where it could work its way behind it.
At the rakes
Along the sloped rake edges, the order is reversed. Underlayment goes down first, and the drip edge is installed over it. Wind-driven rain at a gable end runs down the face of the roof and needs to shed over the top of the metal at the rake, not up underneath it, which is why the layering flips from what happens at the eave.
A crew that gets this backward on either edge is not making a cosmetic mistake. It is a sequencing error that can let water track exactly where the drip edge was installed to keep it out. 05 / THE TELLHow to spot it from the ground, without a ladder
You do not need to get on the roof to get a decent read on whether your home has drip edge, or whether what is there is undersized or damaged.
- Look at the roofline from the driveway. A thin, straight metal lip visible along the edge of the shingles, running the length of the eave and up the rakes, is drip edge doing its job. A roof where the shingles simply end with no visible metal underneath them is a roof without it, or with a badly undersized run.
- Check the fascia paint and wood condition. Peeling paint, dark staining, or soft-looking wood right at the roofline, especially in a consistent line along one whole side of the house, is a classic sign that water has been wicking in behind an unprotected edge for years.
- Look where the gutter meets the roof edge. If you can see raw shingle tucked into the gutter with no metal flashing guiding it in, water is likely running along the underside of the shingle before it drops, rather than shedding cleanly into the trough.
- Note the age and history of the roof. A roof reroofed within the last decade almost certainly has drip edge, since it is now a standard line item on any legitimate quote. An original roof from an older build, or one reroofed a long time ago on a tight budget, is the profile most worth a closer look.
None of this replaces an actual inspection, but it is enough to know whether the question is worth asking before a crew ever shows up. A free inspection settles it either way, with photos of the eaves, rakes, and fascia condition so you can see exactly what is or is not there.
