8. Ventilation
Ventilation is the balanced intake at the soffits and exhaust at the ridge that keeps the attic side of the deck cold and dry year round. It is invisible in the sense that nobody looks for it, and it is the reason a roof installed over a starved attic ages faster from below than it ever does from the weather above. In winter, trapped attic heat melts the underside of the snowpack, the meltwater refreezes at the cold eaves, and it backs up under the shingles exactly where the ice and water shield is supposed to catch it. 9. Ridge cap
